Fix my street. It works!

Just wanted to give a positive story about Fix my street from the ACT government.

I reported via the web that 2 large grates were missing in East Greenway pumping station on lake Tuggeranong.

The gap was large enough for a child to fall through a few metres to the water below.

I affixed a photo and approximate coordinates on the map.

Within 2 days the area was cordoned off and a day after that it was fixed.

This is the 3rd time i have used the facility and all problems were fixed within a few days.

Well done ACT Government – (never thought I’d actually say that!)

While this is great, it is not ideal that they are waiting for a citizen to raise the issue. Is there a regular process to check the status of such things as footpaths?

There are a lot of footpaths/roads/drains etc that would need checking. They would need a full-time crew just checking them and then would have no money left over to actually fix the problems. Getting the public to report hazards is a more efficient way of doing it.

That normally takes people and while Canberra’s very well blessed with public servants right now, the future elsewhere is the public doing general neighbourhood inspections themselves via apps, phones, pc’s, taking photo’s etc.
Local authority saves money on paying wages for inspectors, diverts it towards carrying out improvements.

Their just doing their job, it’s what they are paid to do.

Yes, but it’s nice to see that when decent feedback systems are put in place that the message actually gets through quickly to the people who can go out and fix it.
Many places don’t have this level of response and it’s usually blamed on lazy public servants rather than poor systems.

Without directing any credit to the politicians, it seems the public servants responsible for actual service delivery in ACT govt have done a sterling job IMHO of providing services to the canberra community. I have found them responsive to a number of issues. So well done workers, lets hope the momentum doesnt slow down after the 100 year anniversary is over.

I have reported a few pot holes on Fix My Street and they are always fixed withing a week. Pretty good service so far 🙂

I was amazed at how well the service worked when I made a complaint. I live near a busy park and one of the footpaths was badly damaged with tree roots creating dangerous peaks as well as vegetation growing through big cracks. I saw plenty of people with prams, trikes etc using the road because the path was too difficult to navigate which was what prompted my complaint.

I snapped a few photos and sent them in via the website, and lo and behold – within a week they had a crew there with equipment grinding down the peaks. That was good enough I thought, but it turned out to be a temporary measure as they just recently ripped up and replaced the entire path, over 200 metres of it.

Well done ACT gov – what a pleasant surprise!
