Flame of the week - S-C on the Gungahlin hit and run

Newbie S-C has made a late submission on the fatal Gungahlin hit and run last New Years Eve.

“Mr Evil and popgoescanberra you do not know her how dare you say that she is a nutcase.
i went to school with her. and she was a lovely young lady with more potential than you or any one could imagine. you both clearly are the nut cases for sitting here defending some one that did something so horrible. he not only hurt her and took her life affecting her, he affected all of our lives and hurt all of us especially her family and what did they do to him nothing but take him in.
so piss off and shut up about it.
Mr Evil so you are saying that society pushed him into the car gave him the keys and forced him to run my young friend over. because of some petty bull shit fight. if that is how you think i feel truely sorry for your GF or you GF’s in the futur cause society might one day tell you to hurt her. do you believe that will work in canberra courts??????
any person that gets on here needs to think twice before they start insulting her, think about her family and friends that get on here and see something like this plasted all over the internet jesus has only been a year since she was taken away. get a life!”

They seem to have missed Mr. Evil’s attempt to be facetious, and it’s a mystery what popgoescanberra did to deserve their ire.

But it’s a quality flame, and deserving of recognition.

Congratulations S-C, you’ve won FoTW.

Granny… gone… NOOOOOOOO!!! Who will be site mamma now? I hope she comes back soon, I felt she genuinely cared for us all – even if she disagreed with people. She is a rare Canberra gem.

+1

Seekay & Footloose If these people are Gerry Springers, what are you both? Parasites!

AngryHenrey Instead of assuming that Granny hasn’t had ‘professional help’, how do you know she hasn’t, and also giving advice which you have no comprehension what she is and has been through or any understanding, you must be blooding joking to think granny is looking for answers on this site!

The Brad Agree with you, A1 arshole.

Jesseduck I totally agree with you regarding Binnoski for nutter of the month, I thought it was disgusting that the post was put up, talk about morals, prostitues have more than these reporters, people do strange things when they are worried sick that it could be their sister, and not knowing where her sister is.

Footloose Just because you may go to get help doe’s not solve the problem, whats happened will never change, it doesn’t matter what professional help you get.

Granny At least granny has a heart, and has compassion, who stands up for her rights, yes it sounds like she has been through some tough times, she has insight, a lot more than most of you here.

JB Posts these types posts to get more money, as he knows that he will get a lot of responces.

AngryHenrey Suck suck slurp slurp!

Wouldn’t RA be a boring place if we were all the same

Yup. The threads where everyone agrees rarely go over 10 posts.

….when we’re kind of anonymous, but thanks anyway…

Actually, I am looking at you through a telescope right now.

AH, for what its worth, quite apart from the topic and conversation in the relevant thread, I was taken aback by Granny’s comment yesterday too. From that post and previous ones she’s made I think Granny has had/has a lot to handle. Some people are just more comfortable and/or open in sharing their life experiences, both the good and the bad, than others. I’m in no position to comment on whether she needs help as it is possible she’s open about what’s happened in her life because she’s accepted it. But lets face it, those sort of issues are bound to leave scars regardless. I like Granny and hope she finds happiness.

I’m just glad RA is the kind of place where you can vehemently/angrily oppose another persons view in one thread and be totally on-side in another. Wouldn’t RA be a boring place if we were all the same:)

I just think there’s no point saying ‘thanks for sharing’. You need to share that kind of stuff with someone qualified to help you manage your emotions and greif. I think that applies to our FOTW too.

Cheers for the support I dont think it takes much ‘balls’ though to say ‘it was me’ when we’re kind of anonymous, but thanks anyway…

AH, I read your original post just as you’ve explained above. Kudos for the extra clarification.

Agree with you Angry Henry – I love Granny to bits, but I think she’s got a few issues to sort out. I thought your words were well-intentioned and compassionate. I hope one day you get the chance to meet Granny face to face and elaborate further on your intentions.

Good on you for explaining the situation though – it takes balls to stand up and say ‘it was me’.

Appreciated mate, thankyou.

p1 and AngryHenry I can recall this happening before.

I’ve had a bit of time to think about it since then and I stand by it. I think Granny taking a break is Granny’s choice.

If she seeks help from what I’ve said and I cop a few ‘boos’ for her not being online fine.

Hopefully she’ll come back a little stronger and a lot happier with herself and her situation.

I was on that thread at the time, was equally stunned when Granny dropped in that detail, an my understanding of your post seems to have been the way you intended it.

Or make your own.

I would except I am too lazy, and well, if I read all the news myself I wouldn’t need a site like this to spoon feed it to me….

Reaching out for help, justice, vindication, whatever it may be, online is, IMO, completely futile. Individuals have a right to react or respond in any way they want (within reason and the bounds of their own morals) and because of that people will end up reading things they might not like. These people need to seek help from professionals, not online.

I was on that shooters thread yesterday and it was going crazy, amidst all of the back and forth Granny dropped in a comment about an incident that happened to someone in her family which completely shocked me and really spun me out. I found it extremely disturbing. I commented on it and questioned her motivation for posting it and I also recommended she seek some professional help for her own and her family’s sake. I think I frightened her away, which was not my intention.

I was genuinely disturbed by what she wrote, and have been by other comments she has posted concerning some of her life experiences. I’m concerned about her state of mind, the fact that she has children, and the fact that she spends a lot of time online dredging up stories from her past, some of which are particulalry painful and sad. I don’t know the woman from a bar of soap, however I find her posts are quite revealing and I hope she is currently spending some time away from the keyboard, with her family and working out some of these issues she has given us a glimpse of.

I did not by any means intend to drive someone away, but I do hope in spending some time away she makes the most of the opportunity to sort some things out.

I agree w/ footloose. If you dont like the way things are run, then go to another canberra news site….:/

Or make your own.

Yea, she was pretty admant about it still this AM, O’heard. I’ll be seeing her next week and will try to get her to reconsider.

Hmm. The things one misses. Not sure I even saw a Shooters thread (goes off to have a puzzled look).

What happened with Granny? She’s usually well able to take care of herself, so it’s a bit suprising (I keep trying to work out who she was before she was Granny, but I’m still guessing).

Hmm..so two of the FotW have been “flames” from people who were greatly impacted by the deaths of someone close to them. This strikes me as a little unseemly, but whatevs.

I think we could all get a bit of a giggle from some snarky comments on the forums(and we often do), but I also feel like there is a time and a place for just letting some shit slide – Not because we are told we have to, but simply because we can.

While I understand that it is meant to be in good fun, I suspect that the only fun to be had is by the rest of us and not the flamers in question, despite the congratulatory announcement at the end of the OP. I hardly think they will be thrilled with the honor.

For the record, this was in noway an attempt to tell the Ed how to do their job 😉

I once heard of a child called ‘Ampersand’. The mum didn’t kow what it meant but thought it sounded nice.

Well that just smokes the big one. Boo to bad experience giver.

mockertainment – or is that irritainment..?

#32 ahhh, bogan names. Thats a whole new world of mockery and entertainment.

No Jessie, attacking JB/threatening loss of membership over it is childish.

It’s hardly surprising that occaisional readers miss Mr Evil’s irony, it’s usually completely deadpan and often parodying that which already parodies itself.

I suspect that there is a whole thread to be had on that topic Seekay.

I note from the Daily Telegraph today that Melbourne gangland identity Carl William’s daughter was exciting named “Dhakota”.

I wonder what names – let alone what illiteracies – some of the trash who have recently started appearing in the RiotACT have inflicted on their kids.

I don’t like individuals being singled out in their time of sadness. I just don’t. It might make me childish but that is my right of reply.

I don’t mind the flame/nutter articles myself, but perhaps JB you could set up a few links on the main page to a few “regular columns” this way people who want to read the flames/nutters, questions about the best Indian restaurant, or whatever, have to click on the link to read the article. I would also enjoy reading some of the regular contributors weekly or monthly columns. For example Granny could set up a “Dear Granny” column and it’d be a great read!

I realise some people would still complain even though they are not forced to click on the links, but each to their own. If we all were sugar and spice the site wouldn’t be so interesting.

VYBerlinaV8_the_one_they_all_copy9:13 am 03 Dec 08

Why can’t moderation be applied to the comments that are too far out there? It seems to work for RiotACT regulars.

“Grief and anger are tricky emotions that quite regularly get misdirected. Have a little heart and stop giving your readers a reason to spend their interest rate cut money elsewhere”

Yes, they are tricky emotions and probably best dealt with anywhere but here. Why distraught families/friends spend time trawling the internet, ‘flaming up’ old threads and spewing grief all over their keyboard, I don’t know. Whats wrong with a walk in a park or spending time with family and friends??? Looking for support in this forum is a little strange if you ask me but hey, I’m not for beating someone while their down. And I know it’s (grief)better out than in. I think we’ve all been very tolerant of the Jerry Springer style shenaigans occuring on some of the threads
But honestly, if you read JBs post, there is nothing cruel or nasty in his writing. The comment may well have been moderated if it had absolutly no substance to it.
What I can’t stand is people telling JB how to do his job & threats to management. You don’t like it, start your own website but it sucks having people come on here telling the editor how to do his job…particularly those who’ve enjoyed the site for a number of years. Threatening to pull your no existent membership and suggesting that others spend their interest rate cut on anything but premium membership is one of the most childish, annoying…words escape me *burns up*. That, in my mind, is akin to ‘pulling a pottsy’. It is just ridiculous that you should sulk around telling JB how to do his job. You have NO idea of what you’ve got until it’s gone and I for one have been inspired by your childish display, JD, to get a premium membership as a demonstration that I do appreciate my right to freedom of speech & respect others aswell.

I’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again. Typical of a egotistical johnbob who thinks he is actually more important than he really is.

Its the interwebs, if you dont want to be ridiculed or pointed out or made example of then dont post in the first place. Simple as that. No one forced sc to come on and chuck a wobly.

A flame is a directed blast of anger, so terming the poster’s blast “flame of the week” is just giving it a prize and prominence. It’s not really derogatory.

Surely Flame of the Week is a badge of pride and shoudl be worn under the nicknames like hooligan and newbie and veteran….

I’m going for it next opportunity to let it rip…

Harden up sunshines try saying what these people write to someones face and see how many stitches the nurse has to put in.

Keep it up, I miss nutter of the month…

BB68: Right-on.

Looks like another flame is occurring on the Downer murder thread.

*Takes deep breath and dives in*

Originally I didn’t post on this thread as I thought JB was in the wrong, then I reconsidered. This isn’t Nutter of the Month anymore, it’s Flame of the Week. My take on this is that JB isn’t making derogatory comment on a poor post/poster as NoTM was, rather Flame of the Week seems to be giving even greater voice to a particularly aggrieved contributor.

The site talks about ‘right of reply’ so do we limit that to only general/bland topics and is death/murder/suicide therefore off limits lest someone be offended? I’ve spoken before on RA about my unfortunate but extremely cavalier attitude to death so maybe I don’t understand, but why is the topic of death so sacrosanct in some discussions? Lastly, the OP’s comments, while personal, could also be seen as an attempt at censorship which I for one wouldn’t like to see on RA. Not sure what the solution is but I for one am glad the post was highlighted, otherwise it would have been lost in the ether. At the very least it reminds us that perhaps the victims of such murders are remembered and loved.

jb you’re just having a bad day, right?

what are the worse alternatives you speak of?

Did I use the word renew? no. I said I decided not to become a premium member.

The lost value of a non-existent subscription renewal is zero.

Generally it’s considered to be good form to at least be a subscriber before threatening not to renew.

We’ve tried letting these things slide. It was worse than the alternatives.

Anyone grieving and wanting to take it out on other readers on this site has good reason not to do so.

That’s the way it is, and the way it will continue to be.

Cop a bit of reader feedback on the chin jb. I hated it when you did this to Binnoski and now you’re having a crack at S-C. It’s one thing to have a bit of a “hrmmm” moment on the actual thread but to highlight these poor souls like this is another thing all together. You seem to enjoy it a bit too much. I decided back on the Binnoski “Nutter of the Month” thread to not become a premium member.

Grief and anger are tricky emotions that quite regularly get misdirected. Have a little heart and stop giving your readers a reason to spend their interest rate cut money elsewhere.

The purpose is more deterrence than entertainment.

It’d be nice if we didn’t have to do it but the alternatives are all worse.

There’s a difference between highlighting the fact that someone is upset, and setting them up for ridicule. This “Flame of the week” nomination is clearly the latter. I don’t think inciting schadenfreude is a worthy use of riotact — particularly when the apparent cause of their upset is a death.

I don’t think it would hurt to let this person have their say and let it go. Grief can lead people into saying and doing strange things, and it often shows itself at the most unexpected times.

Well bye bye then.

Also take this as a final warning on your language.

This site sucks post election. And this thread is distasteful.

btw, that last post was tongue-in-cheek.

You forgot a comma there. Be careful with your punctuation.

Unless you really truly do need to be me.

Sometimes I need to be Brad.

I agree.

I also agree.
I’ve been wanting to say this for a while, but have held my words back for fear of being put into moderation…..but in this case, I’ll make an exception.

johnboy, sometimes you’re an arsehole.

Sepi – If people want to rant on teh intertoobs like this, then are they not implicitly highlighting the fact that they’re upset?

I don’t think highlighting these upset people’s posts is necessary either.

So this is the new fangled version of nutter of the month? Did a previos nutter claim slander / libel?

it has all the usual qualities: poor grammar, poor punctuaion, poor sentence structure, poorly defined paragraphs and multiple use of question marks or exclamation marks. All that is lacking is the blocked caps.

Gungahlin Al4:35 pm 02 Dec 08

Hey, it’s someone who is clearly still very upset about their friend being murdered.
They have totally missed the point of Evil’s sarcasm, and that his posts were directed against the alledged murderer, not the victim.
However I don’t think holding up a distressed person to this sort of ridicule is particularly good form.

A mentor is fond of saying to me “there but for the grace of god go I.” Wise words to remember, methinks.

Woo-hoo! These people are better than Jerry Springer’s guests.

Why’s everyone picking on me???? 🙂
