Flint-hearted Garranites get a $1 million upgrade

@ emd – are you referring to the plans that were in the window of the vacant shop (previously the real estate office)? I thought that the plan only related to that particular shopfront??

There is also the redevelopment of the old service station site; the DA for that included a three story (one as an underground/basement carpark) office building – not sure of that is related to the Xnob development though…

Just had the helicopter over here about 3 mins ago. Regular occurance which doesn’t worry us.
Apparently it’s not always patients it’s also often equipment so I’m informed.
Back on topic, we used to live right near the Garran shops a couple of years ago and it probably does need a lift.

At least Chris Shelling (Chris S on this site) was brave enough to put his name to his opinion on the Southcare noise. He gets some points for that.

emd – there was a series of letters to the editor (both Canberra Times and The Chronicle I think) a few years ago from Garran residents complaining about the choppers landing at Canberra Hospital.

I seem to remember that a resident wondered why the choppers couldn’t land at the Southcare base instead, and then the patients be transferred via ambulance to the hospital, so that they ‘did not have to put up with the racket’. I really wanted to respond, but I was too angry.

eatthatfrog – I too say a silent thank you whenever I hear a chopper arriving at the hospital to those who are saving people’s lives, and I am so thankful that it can happen. Corny but true.

Yeah, anyone who visits Garran shops would have seen the signs – complete with floorplan – that have been in the windows for months. I expect John hasn’t seen them as he lives on the wrong side of the lake.

Yeesh. I’m over in Hughes and I am still incredibly icked that people complained about the noise.

You know what I think about on the rare occassion when I hear a helicopter at 2 am in the morning? How lucky to live close enough to a hospital that I can be airlifted out of quickly if the unthinkable to happen.

emd on some level I’m relieved to see that I’m not the only RA-er who has responded to an amusing and facetious angle of JB’s in all seriousness and accidentally taken the wind out of the play!

“Flint-hearted Garranites” – love it! Even if only a dozen of the nasty Garranites vocalised their opposition to the helipad, they’re all tainted by association in fine parochial fashion!

I doubt it has much to do with a few people complaining about noise. I have never heard any resident from Garran complain about the hospital, Richard Mulcahy was probably just looking for a press release subject that might get him some media exposure.

More likely, the Garran shops upgrade is related to the Xbox Projects redevelopment of the shopping complex. They’ll be tearing down the existing shops, and replacing them with a three storey complex (basement level shops with a ground level window display, ground level, and first floor office space). However, no idea when the rebuild will start – the developer is still seeking tenants, and the economic changes lead me to think it may take longer than previously expected.
