Gee, global warming or “climate change” or whatever they’ve rebranded it this week is certainly progressing like those dodgy scientists with their government research grants keep telling us.

I wonder if those panic merchants like Professor Flannery – who bullied governments into building expensive desal plants during the drought due to their prognostications that it would never rain again – have seen the pictures of overflowing dams and the new forecast that it will rain every day in March?

They’re probably too busy sticking their heads in the sand issuing their propaganda and having the compliant puppy dog journalists at The Canberra Times and the ABC perpetuating their now discredited climate change bumph.

Learn the difference between climate and weather.

Then maybe learn some science.

If our country was really worried about global warming we might have built a few more dams during the dry and caught some of this excess of rain before the next dry season arrives. Seriously folks we wouldn’t have a snowy hydro scheme right now if someone had proposed building it in this day and age. The Tennant? dam option was trashed because “it would never fill to capacity” – a completely false prediction as it turns out.

Time to forward think and prepare for the future in a “land of droughts and flooding rain”.

This is where I could make a quip about untreated sewerage coming from Queanbeyan every day via the roads rather than the rivers………. but I’m not that insensitive.

The CT is probably sourcing some new GW crap from the Guradian as we speak. Last year they had an article from the Guardian with accompanying photos suggesting the Christchurch earthquake and floods in Queensland were cuased by climate change.

The new cotter dam has just overtopped.

Hope there’s something left tomorrow.

Can’t wait to see the cost blow out for the dam and how much our utility bills will be next year.

Well no one seems to give a tinker’s cuss about them losing over $50 million on the TransACT venture so who cares?

any comment on the compliant puppy dog non-journalists on talkback radio?

Looks like the new cotter dam is flowing over now…judging by the live feed

Just looking at the Dam Cam now, and the first bit of water has started to head over the lower sections of the wall. Gonna look pretty spectacular soon!

Looks like it’s starting to come over the top of new cotter dam now….

Anyone got an update about the Captain’s flat dam? I seem to remember that last time it rained like this they were concerned about its stability….

Well it’s still there and in one piece. Perhaps it was we residents who were unstable last time. Actually, there was never any real concern about its stability last time – the issue was that the monitoring equipment failed, triggering alarms.

This time the rain has been less torrential, so if we do have problems it will be a slower build-up than 9 December 2010.

There is water roaring down every hillside. But the river hasn’t gone over its banks yet, and is probably still half a metre off doing so.

One of the nice things about science it that it is reviewed by people who know what they are talking about. You may have noticed that scientists including one you have verballed have consistently outlined the *steady increase in extreme weather conditions* rather than “it will never rain again” or “it will never stop raining”. Predicting what might happen is usually considered a confirmation of a scientific theory. Not cause to call it “bumph”

Hmm. The cap on the tower behind the dam is gone. Dissolved?

The slipform was removed a week or so ago as they had completed the concrete pours on the intake tower.

Construction of the Cotter Dam wall is halfway at 40 metres high.

Great picture of new dam wall from upstream.

There is also a cost blowout on the pipeline Angle Crossing to Googong.
I doubt we will learn the full truth easily in an election year.
The blowout in ACT debt is a worry quite apart from ACTEW whining about their revenue being down due to us water consumers all being very economical with water – then on top of that all this water free from the sky has our hands on the garden taps even less.

Last year, yes; last flood no.

Dec 2010, the far end of the Weston path bridge was an island and the path was under water.
The Weston path was visibly above water this morning and this afternoon.

Yep, blame the climate scientists for the flooding.

If anyone can’t see the pictures…

It’s because TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE LOOKING AT THE PICS, and google/picassa is limiting the number of simultaneous users.

So, patience grass-hoppers.

Can’t wait to see the cost blow out for the dam and how much our utility bills will be next year.

Also I hear they’re expecting the new Cotter to be overtopped around 5pm if anyone is in a position to get a picture.

On the radio yesterday Mark S said the new dam wall was currently ~7m higher than old dam. 7m higher across the whole catchment is a fair amount of extra water! He also said the heavy equipment would stay on top wall, and *wouldn’t* be washed off if it went over the top. Fingers crossed for them! 🙂

Hilariously, the Canberra Times just put out an article saying that the new wall is 11m higher than the old one, and that the machinery on top is at risk of being swept off. And the dam will overflow around 8pm if you believe the CT

Actew have a webcam for those wanting to keep an eye on it.

http://www.actew.com.au/Our%20Projects/Enlarged%20Cotter%20Dam/DamCam.aspx

Ahhh, yes…. I can now see the ‘excellent drainage onsite’ that the Corinbank organisers were talking about….! 😉

AAMC said :

Isn’t the dam a single concrete pour? I didn’t think they could stop and that water going over the top was/is a catastrophic problem?

They’ve been stopping and starting every time it rains.

That pic of Googong is an absolute cracker – that spillway is massive.

Apparently we have almost (if not now surpassed) our average rainfall for March. And its only 4 O’clock on the 1st

Meanwhile, don’t drink the brown water:
“The water plant in Molonglo will release some untreated effluent in the Molonglo River. Do not draw from the river for the next 72 hours”
…from 666 twitter feed 5 mins ago.

has anyone looked at LBG? have they opened the SCHRIVINER yet? wonder how the rusty bolt replacement is going?

sorry make that “Scrivener Dam”

Service gate is still installed behind one of the large flood gates, meaning it’s not working.
Not a great time to have it out of commission, Cotter Dam pic above proves that.

That Cotter Dam pic is something when you appreciate its context.
