The ABC has word that we’re expecting 50-100mm of rain and with Googong full flooding in Queanbeyan and the Molonglo Valley.

As always, if you’ve got good photos or video send them in to images@the-riotact.com .

UPDATE 10/02/12 09:49: The flood watch is over.

Dear god, please don’t tell me this nonsensical seppo expression has landed on our shores…

Yeah, it’s cropping up quite often. You can ask them, so you care about it then? but they seldom get it.

Much like people using “it’s” as a possessive. You ask them, it is… what? and get the same puzzlement.

It’s a bogan marker. Makes them as identifiable as a mullet does. It performs at least that useful function.

Sounds like we can expect more of the heavy stuff tomorrow, and possibly the weekend, too. having this respite might mitigate flooding a bit… Oaks Estate rd was closed this morning, meaning Pialligo Ave was flowing better than usual. But if the Morrisett low-level goes under, nothing will be flowing but the river. Carrying that iO with it.

I predict drizzle. The BOM is absolutely hopeless.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

I assume from that you are employed by the bureau.

My money is on that it is all empty promises and won’t be delivered.
But then I’m sure those who are affected by potential flooding would be relieved.

Glad you care Captain.

I live 2/3rds of the way up a hill, could care less if the poor people and Stevian get flooded!

The filth could do with a good wash anyways!!!

Wonder if the guy who owns the used car yard near the waniassa rd/ morrisett st roundabout will move his premium cars closest to the flood point….dej a vu….

I’ve been eyeing that MrBishi Io he’s got, soft top and everything. Save the Io!

Seriously though, if that low-level crossing gets flooded again, I’ll throw a wobbly. Traffic backed up to Bungendore and Burra, the whole town gridlocked.

It’s been pretty consistent, and if it continues I’d say the low-bridge will defiantly close- and it might be good to have a plan re-work and getting kids to school. I don’t understand why the council can’t raise it (yes yes all the focus is on the ring road extension), as it shuts everything down. Wouldn’t be surprised if Oak Estate Rd will be closed as the water was already quite high during peak hour, so no doubt adding more pressure to Yass Rd tomorrow.

Re- Mrtsbishi- am sure if you turned up first thing and made him a flood offer while you are waiting in traffic- but don’t forget to take it away 😉

100mm in Googong catchment will make for flooding in Queanbeyan for sure. Still, it’s pretty much just parks and carparks (and the odd garage) that flood, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

agree, bit over the melodrama in the CT and other local media. You want a real flood- refer to Queensland last year. My in-laws lost their home in a nice part of Brisbane and are finally moving into their home in a couple of weeks. People lost their lives.

Yes the river is quite swollen at the moment, but let’s get real, the only impact is the park alongside, carpark, the caravan park, and cafe (these last 2 will be winched to the racecourse if anything happens so should be a good photo opp. Wonder if the guy who owns the used car yard near the waniassa rd/ morrisett st roundabout will move his premium cars closest to the flood point….dej a vu….

There’s also the happy accident that generally occurs when Queanbeyan floods, involving sewage and Lake Burley Griffin…

Damn right, it means all you ACT whingers will have to swim in my poo for the next 8 months 🙂

P.S – It’s a joke people

P.P.S – I thought I should warn people that I am joking becuase there seem to be a lot of humour deficient people on this site.

You may be joking but I’m not

Put me down for two dumps a day …

Plenty of rain over the googong catchment, the river will likely be up a bit.

Time for a bump. It’s gonna be hard and fast by the looks!

Flood watch….more like ‘skin cancer watch’ at the moment.

As I thought. BOM over-egged our forecast, and completely missed the 100+mm that Penrith got last night, with some pretty nasty flooding that took them all by surprise. I’ve had 10mm so far and people further west in Canberra have had less. Flood alert, oh my aunt…

EvanJames said :

The last QBN flood caused at least $20 in damage

I heard that it was closer to thousands of dollars of improvements.

You’re all laughing now, but Queanbeyan will shore up their flood defences with sand filled free shopping bags. Mr Gillespie, our local pernickity charmer, will be ready to dive in with a big I told you so as the banks of LBG break.

The last QBN flood caused at least $20 in damage, so not too bad.

The 2010 flood was mostly caused by a microburst that hit above Captains Flat, a freak storm in exactly the right place.

This forecast deluge has the potential to cause millions of dollars worth of improvements to Queanbeyan.

Not a good time for one or two of the gates at Scrivener Dam to be out of action, they had to open the four largest last time the floods came through. They don’t have that available now.

Except of course they have lowered the water in the lake to work on the gates, so shouldn’t be too much of an issue you would think.

Doh! Another large delay for the cotter dam!

The water level in the Sullivans Creek that runs through Lyneham, O’Connor, and Turner is a good indicator. If you can raft paddle through it then it’s serious.

But then JB already knows that I guess?

And God sent forth a mighty flood to smite the heathen struggle town from the Earth.
Packs of Winnie Blues and Woodstock cans were seen floating down the river and he looked down on his work and saw that it was good.

anyone told ACTEW?

I think they are being dramatic… the models the BOM uses have been confused by the changes in our weather for some time, and the forecasts are by computers using the models. I’d love for them to be correct as we need significant rain, but I’m not sure if we’ll get this much.
