Floriade and the anti-IR-reformers

Brendan Smyth and his Liberal Opposition have complained about Jon Stanhope and the unions using Floriade to promote opposition to the Federal Government’s planned industrial relations reforms.

Apparently Mr Stanhope and ACTU president Sharan Burrow are going to launch a postcard campaign against the reforms at the flower festival on Monday. Unions ACT have been distributing the same postcards outside the entry gates for the past couple of days.

Brendan Smyth said it was an outrage to be using a tax-payer funded event for political purposes (wonder what he thinks about the Coalition’s IR ad campaign and today’s High Court ruling?).

The radio version of the story had a sound grab from someone at Unions ACT saying, “We’ve done nothing wrong.”

UPDATE The Liberals just got their press release about this up here

id rather see the goons collecting entrance fees so my rates money isnt wasted on an idiot flower show that benefits only purple haired interstaters.

the RiotACT flyers advocating cheaper beer and petrol should make a showing

lets face it, with that as our slogan I think we’d get a majority govt in an election tomorrow

The ACT Libs can’t have it both ways – the Federal Libs just won a court case allowing them to spend squillions on an IR campaign before the policy is announced, so it’s nonsense for the local mob to criticise the ACT ALP for also campaigning about it.

I reckon they should both stop and save us poor long-suffering taxpayers a heap of money; however, it’s the Libs that started this, and the onus is on them. Either that, or Brendan stop his whingeing.

If people feel harassed by the campaign then it will be punishment sufficient to leafletters standing in the rain.

once upon a time liberals believed in freedom, which these activists would seem to be excercising.

if the rest of us are equally free to campaign at floriade (should we choose to) then I don’t have a problem with it.

C’mon Brendan, be clever and organise your own campaign at floriade.

If you can find anything you believe in that is.

So the Federal Government can spend over $20 million on an ad campaign for legislation we haven’t seen on the basis that an ACTU ad on the reforms was a sucess and they needed to counteract it.

Now I’m not sure what the arrangements are but the ACT Unions are using the spectacle of Floriade and its visitors as a place to speak to people about the issue. So long as they are reasonable about that its no different to the Cancer Council raising awarenesss or seeking donations is it.

If the Comrade wants to launch something at an event that is unrelated to that event. Then that is poor judgement and typical of our modern politicians hijacking a community event for their own purposes, but what is Brendan’s problem again. Oh that he as opposition leader can’t get the same photo media op.

So kimba did you talk the union person or just swear at them. I don’t think anybody is being hurt by being asked to sign a petition, polite refusal is not a huge deal I’m sure.

If you don’t agree don’t sign, hell don’t even get into a conversation.

I took some friends to Floraide last weekend and this big goon asked me if I wanted to sign some Union’s IR petition. I just told him to f___ off! I bet if it was some issue that Stanhope didn’t like they wouldn’t be allowed to be at the entrance to Floriade. But this is of course Stanhope’s idea of free speech.
