Floriade but no florists?

Here’s a weird one. I was looking for flowers last week for a Mother’s Day present for my thirthsomething wife.

I thought Manuka would have something smart sophisticated. Instead, they had flowers you might take a maiden aunt on her deathbed. They were old fashioned, drab and embarassing.

Are there any decent florists in this god-forsaken town?

“God-forsaken town” is a little harsh don’t you think? No need to condemn the whole city over the lack of a florist you like.

The flower guy at the Epic farmer’s market on Saturday has good flowers too. Cheap and seem to last for ages.

Agreed RE Prickles, although you need to be specific about delivery times: I placed an order to a workplace which wasn’t dispatched until around 5pm (after the recipient had gone home). Terrific arrangements, though – no issues there.

Snow White and Rose Red were BRILLIANT, but I believe they closed quite a while back, unless they’ve moved without telling anyone. If anyone knows where the proprietors went, I’d give them my business again in a heartbeat. When my nephew was born they did a sensational arrangement in a miniature wicker pram, and they did gorgeous things like throw in a few ostrich feathers and stick little wooden bugs on big green leaves.

Snow White and Rose Red closed on Halloween (October 31st) 2003. To all those who liked our flowers, or my boards out the front, a belated thankyou . Rather than sell out we decided to close the doors, move to the country, get real jobs, and have kids, goats, sheep, chickens etc.
We have all pretty much gone our seperate ways, but remember the shop as a fun happy place and thank all of you who helped.

There is a fantastic florist outside Rebel Sport in Woden plaza. The flowers are always fresh and the prices are very reasonable.

The Flower Man at Charnwood shops is fantastic. Best value florist I have been to…and lovely service.

Prickles – love prickles in Civic.

Ah, the rogue wholesaler! When he put in that advertorial piece in the local paper a few years back, he copped a lot of odium from the flower industry. Apparently, wholesalers have been selling direct to the public for years, but no one was allowed to come out and say it publicly!

I can’t go past the floral wholesaler at the back of Paragon Mall in Fyshwick. However, they only sell the flowers, you have to arrange them yourself.

Second point, you’re a knob.
I guess this is directed at me, since there’s no indication who “you’re” is. Thanks for the insight. I know that already.

I second the florist in Gungahlin although it’s a bit of a hike for sophisticated southside types.

I buy mine online at http://www.janineflorist.com.au/default.asp

Been using that one for a couple of years its based in Canberra delivery is prompt.

There is nothing decent in this town, please leave immediately

I haven’t found anywhere as good as that, but I do recommend Prickles in Civic – a bit edgier than the average florist, and one of very few places that does good arrangements for men – modern geometric vases with greenery etc. Prices are pretty good too. I think they have a website where you can probably see some examples.

Wild Iris on lower floor in the Hyperdome. LoveBumps always likes their ‘pret-a-porter’ selection. And they’re with Interflora so we also use them for interstate events.

Most recently these were a 60th wedding anniversary, closely followed by a combination 85th birthday and funeral. Like many WW2 veterans, Grandad was always punctual. It was like a religious obervance. And when I pass on I hope to die in my sleep the day before I turn 85, just like he did.

Rose Red and Snow White in Alinga St were in to creative stuff, but I’m not sure if they’re still there. Capital Flowers in Oaks Estate used to do cheerful bunches for a decent price, too.

The one in Gungahlin marketplace is quite good, and cheapish too.

The florist in Kingston on Kennedy St (about three shops up from the corner with Giles St) is lovely. It’s run by an extremely friendly Asian couple who always provide less-expensive and beautiful flowers. I’d definitely recommend them.

First point, don’t mistake Manuka for sophistication.
