Territory and Municipal Services are warning that the Floriade embuggerance to Commonwealth Avenue is starting again:

Effective from Monday 13 August 2012 the following arrangements will be in place:

— a perimeter fence installed around the Floriade site;
— temporary traffic lights will be operational on Commonwealth Avenue; and
— the speed limit along Commonwealth Avenue will be reduced from 70 km/h to 60 km/h.

To assist with installation of the fence there will be lane closures along Parkes Way (westbound) between 9 am and 4 pm on Monday 13 August 2012.

From Monday 20 August 2012 Commonwealth Park will be closed including the three car parks at Regatta Point which are bounded by Barrine Drive, Regatta Place and Albert Street.

Commonwealth Park including the abovementioned car parks will be reopened to the public at 9 am on Monday 29 October 2012. The temporary traffic lights on Commonwealth Avenue will also be removed on Monday 29 October 2012 and the speed limit returned to 70k m/h.

Another nearly quarter of the year with dodgy roadworks signs in the middle of our capital city during a period of great tourism.

Stay classy Canberra.

Speed limit reduced by 10km/h from 70 to 60, wow, that is a HUGE difference!!!!

Still….better than being reduced to 40km/h I spose…..

It just means that most drivers will be exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h, rather than the regular 20km/h.

Floriade. It means the magpies start swooping. It must annoy them, too.

awww mannnnnn! I wish they’d build an underpass already!!!

You mean like the one located 30m from the lights that goes under the bridge??

You mean the one that nobody was using, hence the reason why they installed temporary traffic lights?

Couldn’t the government raise some much needed revenue by fining road-clogging pedestrians for Jay-walking?

There’s a perfectly good underpass. Better signage and better organised pathways and fencing out of the car park would see most people use it.
For the few dumbos who want to play Frogger, get a couple of policemen out there to sort them out.

Its only jaywalking if it is within 20m of a controlled intersection.

No, “Jaywalking” is anything we decide to put into legislation. All we have to do is legislate against idiots doddering across the road when there is a perfectly good underpass available.

So, I say again, it is only jaywalking if it is within 20m of a controlled intersection….that IS in our current legislation.

Cars stopping for people walking? That’s outrageous! What is this, Nazi Germany?

given that there are traffic lights with pedestrian crossings in 80 zones, I don’t get why the speed limit has to be lowered for this one.

it ought anyway to permanently be a 30kmh zone to ensure enveryone has the leisure to enjoy the views from this vantage point in our beautiful city…

No, every car must always have a Segway in front of it to ensure things proceed at a proper pace.

Seriously though, given the number of senile tourists who visit during Floriade, extra precautions are necessary.

Out of my way! I’m a motorist!

The greatly increased traffic going into and coming out of the car parks.

A quick look at Nearmaps give 260m. So well done on being only out by 800%.

Meh, it was a guesstimation based on the last time I was in the area about 3 years ago. It is still more than close enough to take the 5 minutes to walk around it since you are going to spend the next couple of houors walking around looking at flowers.

Personally doesn’y bother me as I try not to go into the city more than once a month or so (and then its a night to go to see a show at Canberra Theatre) and since I come from Quangers I don’t need to go near Commonwealth Ave.

Yeah who cares a few hundred metres here a few hundred there we all make mistakes.Shite I even had one drawn to my attention this morning by some qbngeek!lol

Haha, but at least we can take the corrections on the chin. There are many on here who would have argued that nearmaps is wrong or even just shouted “NO ITS NOT”.

Johnboy, can we just cut & paste the whingers & replyers from the last couple of years & beat everybody to it.

Big deal people, so you have to 60km/h for 1km. Sureley you can micromanage your time somewhere else in the day?

I heard that Brockway got a monorail for their Floriade and it fixed everything.
