Andrew Barr is letting the world know that Floriade has been a smashing success in 2010:

Mr Barr said official event evaluation results show Floriade was an outstanding success this year – providing a record economic return to the ACT, record levels of interstate visitation and the highest attendance figure seen at the event since the introduction of turnstiles in 1999.

“Floriade 2010 attracted a massive attendance of 471,979 over 30 days, which is up 30 percent on last year’s figure of 362,684,” Mr Barr said. “As part of this result, NightFest also fared very well in its third year, with an attendance of 29,522 compared to 16,294 in 2009.”

Mr Barr said Floriade had a long and proud history as one of Canberra’s premier tourism events and delivered significant economic benefits to the local community.

“The staging of the 2010 event generated additional direct expenditure in the ACT totalling $26.9 million – a record for the event and an increase of $4.2 million on 2009,” Mr Barr said.

Well done all involved.

They were probably paying more attention than people not checking thread dates??

I went in a couple of times but only through the turnstiles once… I don’t think they were that well policed!

I was starting to think that tulips might be getting a bit boring but glad to see that they still have pull factor.

I’m glad it’s doing well but didn’t it rain a lot last year, cutting attendances?

Just think how many more people would go if they had the V8 Supercars tearin’ it up between the tulips!

Of course, they have set it up in such a way that to get from the city to the lake, the easiest path is through the turn styles, counting as a visit.

Also to walk through Floriade, around Nerang Pool and back into the event will count as a new visit.

Not that either of these things matter to the average punter, it’s free entry anyway, but one would assume that it does inflate the daytime attendance figures somewhat. I think that I would have counted for about 10 visits but only actually went to see it once.
