Floriade uber alles

The ABC has the happy news that the last Floriade (which we thought to be distinctly ho-hum) was the “best ever” in terms of the droves of people tramping through the trade tents in search of flowers.

Ever more visitors looking at ever less flowers! Hurray!

Australian Capital Tourism’s Sarah Hitchcock puts her priorities clearly in perspective:

“A good event is a blend of a good entertainment program, lots of activities on-site and obviously a good horticultural display”

Maybe I’m just weird but I can’t say I’ve ever been entranced by either the entertainment of the activities.

It gets better though, they’ve really been locked in the room of mirrors to come up with a “focus” (themes are so passe dahlink) for next year:

“Australian icons, myths and legends”

I love it when a “focus” is so indistinct it needs five words to express it.

From the website: “Imagine the MCG in flowers, giant thongs in the flower beds and a uniquely floral take on Uluru, one of Australia’s most recognisable icons.”

I’m sure the concept of giant thongs will grab the attention of many foreign visitors. How disappointed will they be when they see humongous flipflops . . .

a kookaburra in an old gum tree as well.

I’m sure there will be a swagman and a bushranger too,

let no cliche be left behind.

going to be a lot of rainbow serpents methinks

The focus could just be ‘Australian’, as in the opposite of ‘un-Australian’.
