By johnboy - 14 September 2011 26

Canberra FM have sent in the following:

104.7 has continued its unbroken 4 year run as Canberra’s favourite radio station and 5 years as the regions number 1 commercial radio station. MIX 106.3 has also experienced audience growth with 92,600 listeners over the age of 10 years now listening each week, placing them in a strong number 3 position. New hosts, Pete & Biggzy, have also retained the number 2 commercial spot in the competitive Breakfast time-slot.

General Manager of Canberra FM Radio (operator of both 104.7 & MIX 106.3), Eoghan O’Byrne, said “104.7 will be celebrating a well-deserved result and are to be commended for consistently holding their number 1 position over the past 5 years, as it’s a feat that not many radio stations can lay claim to.” O’Byrne added, “We’re extremely happy with the results and audience loyalty with MIX 106.3 as the station continues to re-build with a new breakfast show, branding and line-up changes all in place for only a few weeks prior to this Audience Survey.”

The owners of Canberra FM Radio must be raking it in. Since they never have to buy a new CD, their only expenses must be wages and electricity.
I for one have heard Eagle Rock (to give an example) enough times in my life. Same s*** everyday FFS….

00davist – sorry to suggest that the huge drop in 106’s popularity may happen to suggest that other people may also consider that Pete and Biggsy are crap and the station as a whole is stale. Please feel free to keep enjoying their inane stories about eating apple cores etc.

This is exactly what I mean, you cant seem to make your point without trying to be insulting to those who have different opinions, perhaps you need to get down from your high horse, and realise you are no better than me.

Your comments are patronising and insulting, simply becase you see yourself as being “right” and those with a differing taste as “Wrong” as opposed to just realising that the two are simply Different.

Or do you have a reason why you need to insult people, does it make you feel good?

Que? I read Reprobate’s informative post quoting the real stats, I didn’t see any abuse, other than the abuse you’re shelling out.

And this:

I actually don’t mind the new breakfast show on 106, and I would thank you not to go around trying to make people feel small, just because their tastes differ from your own, there is more than enough self-righteous and egotistical d*cks in the world to go around, you are more than welcome to leave your post.

Pretty unecessary.

The 106 breakfast show IS crap, and inane. They could save themselves some money by going back to just music… plenty of people driving to work are happy with music and it would give people real choice.

As soon as they start talking, I switch over.

My radio is almost always set to RawFM. No mindless chatter or news on a loop. When I flick back to 104 all I hear is advertising or self important douchebags. JJJ just feels too folk to me these days. I miss the 1990s JJJ music style.
RawFM won’t suit everybody as it’s electronica, dance, a bit of hip hop and urban etc. The nice thing is it’s all about the music!

What a load of crap. I find it impossible to believe that in a politically aware city like Canberra, the talk stations 2CC and 666 are not the leading stations.

Where are they distributing the ratings books? The local kindergartens?

Between catching up with the news and current affairs of the world during my lunch break, and active disscussion here and at varios news sites, I get more than enough ‘Talk’

I have a long drive to work of a morning, and I want something i dont need to think about, a little music, and maybe, if i’m lucky, something i can laugh at.

You can be politically aware, without becomeing so absorbed in constant political and news discussion, that you become tired, and over-inflated. So no, just becase more people than you expected listen to a different radio station to yourself, does not mean the survey was taken by a kindergarten class, or any other form of patronisation you care to throw in.

Yep lots of radio but almost all via podcasts here too. And on the phone I can listen to them at double speed. Still easily understood, and because it is talking I can still hear what’s going on around me while cycling. Ordinary radio just seems too slow now…

What Canberra FM’s spin doesn’t tell you:
Mix106 has dropped from 15.8% last survey (and 15.5% before that) to an appalling 11.5% now – nearly a third of their audience has deserted them in this period alone. Time for advertisers to start asking questions about rates now?
666 jumped from 15.9% to 19.0% – picking up some previous 106 stalwarts no doubt.
104’s increase from 18.8% to 20.3% would be pretty good for Canberra FM except that 1.5% is just a shuffle across of some 106 previous listeners who have (rightly) abandoned that station courtesy of the new breakfast team.

I’d like to see the breakfast figues to confirm how big the exedous from 106.3 in that timeslot was…

I wonder if the overall Radio listener numbers are stable, going up or going down. I must admit to not listening to Radio in general for a few years now. (Ever since Adam Spencer and Will Anderson finished up on the triple J morning show).

I now prefer pod casts and my own music collection. Even my kids avoid the Radio.

20.3% to 666’s 19%? I call that “by the slimmest of margins”.

A margin I think would quickly evaporate if 666 would just move over to FM – please?
Regional ABC is on FM elsewhere – Sunshine Coast’s Coast FM for example.

Then they would lose their 666 call sign..

The beast give up its number?

More likely to go all digital methinks.

I wonder if the 106 morning ratings figure was from when they had no “personalities” annoying people with their inane chatter, and just played music? I found that poached me right away from Scotty and Nige, whom I quite enjoy.

I often prefer the music on 106, but as soon as the vacuous yap starts up, I go to 104.
