For a good meal, the City Club is the place - to avoid at all costs

Small footy clubs have long had a tradition of propping up players’ games fees with part-time work in the local pub or club. So perhaps that’s what’s going on at Garema Place’s Magpies City Club.

Regardless the reason, who ever is back there in the kitchen, it ain’t a cook.

Garlic bread: passable but strangely lacking anything resembling garlic.

Salt’n’pepper squid: so much salt the squid was unrecognisable. Had to be scraped off to be edible.

Salad: drowned in a dressing where only the copious oil could be tasted.

Garlic prawns: served with nothing other than a little sandcastle of rice. Mushy and simply inedible. Clearly a long way past being fresh.

Schnitzels: overcooked but just passable.

Roast turkey: dry and fatty at once – an achievement to be sure.

And the chips: golden and crispy? You wish. Soggy and the colour of (with no exaggeration) beer bottle glass. A clear example of what happens when the deep frier oil is not cleaned out daily. A shame the photo evidence didn’t turn out.

There’s the “ambience” too. There may be some limits on what you can do with a venue in a basement, but it seems no attempt at all has been made in this place.

The beer price was good and seemingly they had not yet devised a way of making it crook, so that was OK.

But even with the relatively cheap prices for the ‘light meals’, the City Club remains a dining venue to be avoided by all, and a good way for the Magpies to disenfranchise their support base. Seven people in our group including two paid-up members all vowed to never return.

Went there once with the work mates. Was so delighted to see that there was a veggie burger on the menu. I was thinking, fried veggie pattie (not great but edible) tomato sauce, lettuce, tomato, processed cheese and white bread hamburger bun! I got all that and a little bit more, a big fat piece of BACON…….

Well, bacon’s almost a vegetable. I mean, pigs eat vegetables.

No, its still pretty poor. I have noticed over the last few years that ‘club’ food prices have soared to and exceeded restaurant prices. Eastlake in Kingston and the Ainslie Football Club are two of the main offenders here.

So is dickson tradies food edible again – I’ve been scared to try, it was so bad for awhile.

Ooops, didn’t notice the date. So sounds like the ex Dickson Tradies food-haters might have moved to the City Club, and they’re now GONE and a competent mob have taken over. Might be time for a new food review G-Al?

Sounds like the mob who were murdering food at the Dickson Tradies have found a new gig…

None of that would have been fresh or even made in house I would suggest. So it wouldn’t have even needed a cook. Bought in bulk from a food service company and reheated. They obviously don’t care much about their suppliers and what little they have to do to finish it off in house is probably done by the dish cleaner.

they got a new kitchen now and a new operator running its Australian/Vietnamese and quite good place is packed for lunches these days.

The Food is very poor at the Magpies City Club. It was a truck load better under the former management and one third of the cost. Will NEVER eat there again. Worse meal I have ever had it my life.

Used to be a regular at this place- came for cheap and cheerful lunches at least once a week. The new mob who run the bistro has jacked up the prices and the food is quite frankly awful. Doubt I’ll go back for a long time. It’s a shame as the place was showing promise after the renovations a couple of years ago.
