With no Corinbank this year the best festival action in Canberra this summer is a clear win for Foreshore.

And today the lineup (headliner TBA 28 July) has been announced:

Tiesto (NLD)
Calvin Harris (SCL)
Cut Copy
Benni Benassi (USA)
Major Lazer (JAM)
Afrojack (NLD)
Art v Science
Luciano (CHE)
Miami Horror
Caspa and MC Rod Azlan (UK)
Cassian
The Only
Yolanda be Cool
Stafford Brothers

The organisers have sent through the following:

Marking the end of spring and the start of another great summer, Foreshore is back with more than you wished for! Foreshore’s line-up is sure to delight you, and there is still more to come!

Foreshore has established itself as Canberra’s number one summer youth music festival, and now in its 4th year, it continues to be as strong and entertaining as previous years! We are bringing you the very best Aussie talent as well as some of the biggest names in the music scene internationally.

Tiesto is uncontested as the number one Dj in the world who has been nominated for a Grammy, had worldwide hit singles and performed at the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics with music he composed especially for the occasion.

Calvin Harris is the king of electropop and is one of the few artists who have successfully bridged the gap between chart hits and all out club bangers.

Cut Copy walks the line as pioneers of the new sound movement, creating their own genre of scuzzy disco, post-post-punk, electric rock, space pop of sounds.

Benny Benassi is a Grammy Award winning DJ and producer of electro house music, including the album Hypnotica.

Major Lazer is a collaboration of dance music heavy weights Diplo and Switch. It’s the pair’s dancehall project—a survey of a wide range of Jamaican rhythmic styles, all given a contemporary sheen and the producers’ own ideas.

Afrojack has produced some amazing original beats, as well as crafting some legendary remixes that are played in clubs and headphones world-wide, and that was just the beginning.

Art Vs Science have become a live powerhouse, selling out shows, ascending to festival favourites all over the nation and are soon to release their debut record!

Resident in Ibiza’s infamous Pacha club, Luciano is a world renown, award winning DJ, and founder of Cadenza Records who has performed at virtually every major club and festival in the world!

Miami Horror have flourished into one of the most hyped bands of 2010 who’ve been careering around the Aussie festival and club circuit like a demented spinning top that never seems to stop.

Cassian is the one and only zulu-synth warrior and his quest for dance floor domination has led him to battles all around Australia, and more recently, internationally.

Bursting onto the scene in the last 12 months, The Only have already released their debut single ‘Dancin’, and recently toured their “Only F*cking Rave Party” across the country!

Yolanda Be Cool has quickly become a household name with their 2010 dance floor phenomena We Speak No Americano, which they are currently touring internationally!

If the sibling duo of DJs, The Stafford Brothers, doesn’t ring a bell, then one must wonder where you’ve been hiding for the past few years. Certainly not in the clubs, where the Stafford Brothers are sure sell-out headliners in every state around the country,

Jim, “sometimes I’m so cosmic I freak myself out…”

Heh, just all part of my attempt to grow old disgracefully. 🙂

It’s a good thing I didn’t spell it incorrectly.

Great! Another festival where ‘musicians’ spin other people’s records/discs and people worship them like they’re Hendrix

Quite quite wrong.

People praise them as good DJ’s doing what they are expected to do. To compare them to fans of Hendrix (as I am) is a strawman at best. To compare it to Hendrix is just musical snobbery.

A good DJ will get praised for the way they make the crowd feel, and the way in which they entertain the crowd, and the way that they elicit an emotional response from the crowd.

There is a great deal more to DJing than just playing other people’s music, a great deal of skill to it in fact. Most DJ’s will be handling 2-3 decks, and most these days will be using sequencers and samplers in addition .

If you think it’s that easy, get up on stage one day and give it a go, see how long you have a crowd for.

I just wish there was a decent Trance (preferably Goa Trance) night in Canberra, one for the “more mature” clubber, where us older folks could get up and shake our thing too. (Leaving our zimmer frames at home.)

Come to that, I wish there was any decent clubbing in Canberra.

I came here looking to post what PB has already said … and found myself quite astounded that you’ve said it. Kudos to you, PB, you’re a man of surprising depth.

Always been a big fan of the Goa stuff (although I must admit to a lingering penchant for gabba and speedcore).

Au contraire.

My statement was (and I’ll repeat so you can absorb slowly):

“Another festival where ‘musicians’ spin other people’s records/discs and people worship them like they’re Hendrix”

The adoration the people have for these faux musicians is much like the adoration Hendrix fans have/had for him. The adoration is the comparison.

The rest is just your piffling way of trying to attack personally when you can’t do so literally. I would have thought some ‘Goa Trance’ would encourage a calmer life.

Back peddling like mad? Interestingly hysterical n’est ce pas?

Fancy spelling “eronioosly” wrong, a bit of a faux pas…

You’re just being silly now. You made a comparison between Hendrix’s fans, and the fans of these DJs. Why is the “worship” (your word not mine) of fans of a DJ indicative of someone being a “shallow twat”, as opposed to the adoration of Hendrix’s fans? It’s been proven that DJ’s are creative, why should that not be admired?

Childishness in the extreme there VG. I have put my points, in counter to your arguments, just as you have done. It’s not my fault your points hold no water.

(You are the one referring to people as “shallow twats” for enjoying themselves, when you only demonstrate your own shallowness by doing so.)

That just goes to show how little you know about Goa trance then.

So your problem is with people enjoying this music/event vg? I hope it brings you comfort.

It was you who compared them to fans of Hendrix, eronioously, now you are back peddling like mad. Fans of Hendrix appreciated him for many things, his DJ skills were not amongst them, so again YOUR comparison fall apart.

The modern DJ may use “Electronic effects units (delay, reverb, octave, equalizer, chorus, etc.) Some club DJs use a sub-harmonic synthesizer effect which either doubles low frequencies with energy added an octave lower or synthesizes harmonics such that the impression of a very low bass sound is added to the mix. A computerised performance system, which can be used with vinyl emulation software to manipulate digital files on the computer in real time. Multi-stylus headshells, which allow a DJ to play different grooves of the same record at the same time. Special DJ digital controller hardware to manipulate digital files on a PC or laptop. Samplers, sequencers, electronic musical keyboards (synthesizers), or drum machines.”

As Johnboy has rightly said, there is a great deal of skill in modern DJ practice, and your ignorance is showing.

I take offense at your description of people enjoying themselves in this way as “shallow twats. The few that you know you may think of as “shallow twats”, but I think that really reflects more on you than them.

(My god, we agree on something Johnboy. I’ll go away and reconsider my position! 😉 )

(And just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean a lot of other people won’t)

Most DJ’s at this level are more like composers than disk spinners. Yes they might be mashing samples, but a lot of what they’re putting together is original.

Have spun selected CDs on many an occasion at a party with very happy responses.

A DJ is just a rip off merchant without the creativity to make their own music. The fact they are held in such high regard these days shows their fan are as shallow as the people they follow.

Note that I didn’t compare them to Hendrix, I compared the level of awe and worship in their shallow followers. For all most people understand, a DJ could just be jumping on stage, pressing ‘play’ and then peforming the physical equivalent of lip-synching.

I would never compare them to Hendrix. That would be a pointless endeavour. To be honest, having surveyed the crowd at Foreshore on a number of occasions, the majority of the people there are shallow twats who couldn’t spell Hendrix in any case.

‘Goa trance’????………eff me……..

Then why not just go to the lake with a few friends, take drugs and jump up and down? There’s no cover charge for that.

Its not quite an ‘event’ now is it? Turn up, shell out, get lost.

+1 for both.

‘Within the world of white people, there might be no better job than a DJ: knowing a lot about music; playing vinyl; no real musical talent required; and constant recognition of how great you are for knowing about music. It is perfect. Furthermore, DJ’s have the best talent-to-groupie ratio of any career.’ Stuffwhitepeoplelike.

should be renamed Fluro-Shore. never again do I want to see that much pale blue, pink and orange! new decade new palette ppl!

The only thing you can judge these type of DJs on, really, is their popularity. There are internationally recognised competitions for turntablism but that’s a different kettle of fish altogether.

There’s also another announcement next week in regards to a headlining band and some more DJs from the Foreshore lineup.

I’ll be DJing on the day, should be a good time 🙂 Last year was the best one yet IMO.

Line up looks good, but Id rather spend my money on something else, thing with djs is that they sound the same on cd as they do live…

I did watch the embedded video, it looked like a load of DJs and dance music. Hence I wondered if they had any live bands as well or if it’s just dance only. Their website refers to “hottest bands and electronic acts” so I’m guessing maybe it’s dance only. I just thought someone here might know the answer…..

I’ve no idea what Foreshore is (having recently moved to both Canberra and Australia). Do they have live bands there or is it just DJs and dance music?

You could follow the links or watch the embedded video….

Who did Hendrix worship. And who’s this tiestocles the others speak of?

I don’t think people go for the music.

Bimbo Geek….

Perhaps if you looking for something as your on a budget head out to a local ‘Blue Light Disco’, or maybe the Friday night disco on ice at the Canberra Ice Rink in Woden. That will only cost you $15.00….or is that too much…

How can you call ‘Foreshore’ a low quality event, when the organisers are bringing to town the world’s NUMBER ONE DJ in Tiesto.

Funny how other events are so much cheaper though.

The setting is rather unusually good though.

Looks awesome to me. Tiesto, Cut Copy, Art vs Science – what is there not to like?

Concerts are expensive to put on. People still rave about the first Foreshore (the one in the rain). It’s great to see these kind of events in Canberra.

The only problem with Foreshore is that it doesn’t really have a style. It tries to be everything to everyone and ends up being hideously overpriced pop.

Canberra has some fantastic festivals and parties that have mind-blowing music, (in particular I’ve completely rediscovered house music this year) they’re just not as well promoted as Foreshore and Warehouse because they don’t have as much money behind them. The best events are run by enthusiasts and feature a particular style. By focusing on doing one thing really well some events are so much higher quality even though they have less general appeal.

I probably won’t go to Foreshore because it’s a low quality event and I’m on a budget, I’ll only be there if a lot of my friends go and my finances dramatically improve.
