Forget about Gungahlin Drive Extension - what about Gungahlin Drive Original!

Gungahlin Drive Extension has received a lot of scrutiny since its opening, and rightly so, particularly as we now witness the farce of roadworks beginning again. However, I would like to shine a spotlight on the deplorable state of the “original” Gungahlin Drive, between Barton Highway and Kosciuszko Avenue.

When driving towards Gungahlin on this so called “drive”, you really, and I mean, really, have to concentrate (as if you were driving on a NSW road!). The road is criss-crossed by seams that distract the driver, present a very uneven surface, and make centring the vehicle and identifying lane widths very difficult.

Worst of all, though, are the number of potholes, especially along the seams that run here and there across the length and breadth of the lane. After every rain, holes open up in the seam and quickly become potholes of quite frightening dimensions. On my last journey a few days ago coming home from the ANU, I counted no less that eight on a stretch of road less then two kilometres long! And this road is about to bear an even heavier load of traffic as Franklin continues to be developed apace.

Even a cursory glance at this road leads one to believe that its construction was a very dodgy job indeed. If that assessment is wrong or unfair, I would like to know why and how?

Indeed, is Gungahlin Drive worthy of the award of the most potholed-road in the ACT’s urban network? (And yes, I have contacted TAMS about the potholes – several weeks ago.)

Dear Ralph, I apologise for my severe attack on your person. Doing such makes me as bad as you.

RALPH #2 … why do posters just make blatant statements that are untrue? If you DO drive on the piece of road mentioned you would KNOW that, as Nanzan says, it IS full of potholes (in a fairly straight line) and criss-crossed by lines and seams as in the original post. And then you make assertions as to the poster’s ability to drive because yopu are an @rse hole.

The stretch of Bunda St in Civic between Mort St and down past the new Canberra Centre to Petrie Plaza – arguably the busiest and most frequently visited stretch of road in the city – is also an appallingly rutted and bumpy stretch of bitumen.

For what it’s worth I agree with nanzan, that part of road is crap. Another one badly in need of upgrade IMO is Anzac Pde, especially heading toward the War Memorial.

The road wasn’t dodgy, all the criss crossing you talk about comes from where it was built as a single lane in parts and not duplicated. When they do that they don’t ever resheet the joints, hence why the road breaks up at the joints.

Don’t worry, it is getting to the point where maybe it needs to be resealed, maybe this coming resealing season it might get done.

I know the pot holes you speak of. Yes they get repaired all the time, but come back after a heavy rain. Just keep your eyes on the road and you should be fine. Problems usually arise when a car is following too closely to the one infront, and can’t move quickly enough when the 1st car moves to miss the hole.

Thanks for the driving tips everybody!

But, are you all sure we are talking about the same stretch of Gungahlin Drive? I did say the bit between Barton Highway and Kosciuszko Avenue (Gungahlin-bound).

I mean, 8 decent-sized potholes in 2 kilometres does seem pretty bad to me – or do we have to adjust our standards now when it comes to road design and safety? And no one did mention another road in the ACT that compares (dare I bait)….

Sorry, I do think arterial roads, in a capital city, any city, should be without potholes, for most of their length.

You should be ‘concentrating’ whenever you’re driving. I’ve never had a problem with this stretch of road.

It’s no better or worse than any other piece of road in the ACT, and as you mentioned it is far better than over the border. (You tried driving in Sydney or Melbourne of late? Melbourne actually put potholes in the road and label them as tram lines).

The whole Gungahlin Drive has been badly handled, from it’s initial days as a single lane road for all of Gungahlin, through to it’s initial duplication, extension, and now extension duplication. But as far as road surfaces go, it’s not something that I’d complain about.

And Canberrans wonder why there’s angst on our roads…

The road is fine.

I’ll watch out for you though as it seems you have trouble piloting your car.

What are you driving, a unicycle with a flat tyre?
