(thanks to Ari for the heads up)

In what we can only hope is the end of Dr. Foskey’s housing woes the MLA’s former public-housing residence has gone under the hammer for a stonking $665,000. The Canberra Times has the story, as does the ABC.

The ABC has Minister Hargreaves putting it all in perspective.

Housing Minister John Hargreaves says the sale means the Government can now buy more suitable properties for those who have been waiting on the housing register for some time.

“We can actually buy one-and-a-half free-standing homes for people who have specific needs, or we can buy a couple of two bedroom apartments around the traps, also to suit those people,” he said.

Oooh – ooh – how about lets see whether the ACT Govt uses these “extra” monies to pay off some of the vast debt that is created by having a large number of people who don’t pay market rent or whether they actually use it to buy new residences for public housing. My bet is on debt repayment… Although I could be wrong – “can” could of course mean “will” – even though they didn’t actually use that word (though of course I’m sure they meant to).

[sigh of relief] – now we can all rest easy taking comfort from some form of closure to this unfortunate debate.

Now… how about a debate surrounding whether it is best to have one poorly maintained property for tenants to live in squaller (albeit in Yarralumla) or perhaps two in better condition in other suburbs (still within reasonable distance to essential services)?

[grabs coat, runs for door…]
