Poisoned bait will be buried on reserves in northern Canberra today as part of the continuing fox cull, according to an article in the Canberra Times.

The bait is being buried at Mulligans Flat and the Goorooyarroo nature reserves. The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has warned residents that domestic dogs are banned in the area.

“Baits will be shallow buried and will not be placed within 500 metres of residential properties,” Urban Reserves sanctuary ranger-in-charge Stephen Wilkes said.

“Pet owners are advised that domestic dogs are at risk of poisoning and there is no effective antidote to the 1080 poison.”

Mr Wilkes said the fox culling program was designed to control feral predators in the reserves and help protect native fauna and reintroduced species.

“Signage has been placed at the entrances to the reserves to inform residents that 1080 poison is being used in the area for fox control and that dogs are prohibited,” he said.

Instead of 1080 why don’t they send in Chinese Needle Snakes, then snake-eating gorillas, and then when wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

It worked in Springfield.

Cane toads?

A possum cull next?

At least shooting the things ensures you only end up with dead foxes, rather than some dead foxes and some dead natives.

Except for Dingo’s and Tassie devils which don’t live in Mulligans Flat and the Goorooyarroo nature reserves what sort of other native animals will dig for meat ? I can only think of a monitor lizard or maybe a blue tongue that would dig for meat but they hibernate from May to August. Probably the reason they bait now and not in summer.

Perhaps that could explain why the natives are restless.

I’m all for culling foxes, but it’s pretty disgusting that they will be using 1080 for it. That c$&p should be banned. Apart from it being pretty cruel, it’s not exactly targeted. At least shooting the things ensures you only end up with dead foxes, rather than some dead foxes and some dead natives.
