After what seems a pretty good innings in anyones book, Emeritus Professor of the John Curtin Scool of Medical Research, Professor Frank Fenner, has been honoured ahead of his pending retirement. ABC Online have a couple of brief artciles here and here on the man who cured smallpox and along with Clunies Ross, injected himself with myxomatosis to prove it wasnt harmful to humans.

The John Curtin Medical Research Centre website has this bio on a remarkable man who obviously didnt have much faith in his superannuation. Interesting reading for a whole bunch of ANU students who are more familiar with Professor Fenner from the Student Accomdation named after him.

ok, so it was bit of licence on my part, and that of the ABC online crew. Still, as the head of the UN program he was at least responsible for the direction of the research and can take some credit for the outcome.

Without taking away from Frank’s eminence, he would be embarrassed at the notion he cured smallpox. He headed the UN team that eradicated the disease. The last case was in North East Africa.
