Did anyone see this listing for the Advance Screening of Frank Miller’s 300 in Saturdays Canberra Times?

Canberra Times Advert

Nothing is mentioned on the Hoyts website, but it seems the answers are listed here.

I wanna see if anyone actually enters the Best Dressed Spartan competition in the current weather.

[ED – err, what is it? Oh, wait, it’ll be this]

for those that are interested in history, ther eis an excellent article on herodotus in the jan/feb issue of ‘the atlantic monthly’.

the same issue also has a balanced account on the iraq situation.

recommended reading.

IMDB viewers give it a 8.1/10, a very high score for that site. Apparently based on a comic book.

“For all those who haven’t seen it, expect a “Sin City” feel with a lot of one-liners and gory action. If that’s not for you then don’t waste your time. Just remember that the Persians in the movie are just a fictional representation that shouldn’t be taken seriously.”

Spartan women had to fool their men into thinking they were boofing another man just to keep the race going in the last history i read.

It’s a triumph of gay militarism this film!

Who said “Go tell the Spartans?

Is it homoerotic? Well, it’s about a society of men living together, so it’s homosocial (which is diffferent to homoerotic). And they are muscular, and remarkably underdressed, and doing fairly macho stuff. So it’s concievable that gay men could be turned on watching them.

The right wing thing, though is a bit of a furphy. Yes, it’s a fairly militaristic story. Which some people seem to think is right wing. However, that is, of course, bollocks – cuba and china don’t have armies?

You can’t aim a bonfire, you just throw things on it.

i just love it when softheads parrot others opinions, without any form of analysis or thought of their own.

I’m confused, was that aimed at me bonfire?

i just love it when softheads parrot others opinions, without any form of analysis or thought of their own.

its a reason why advertising works so well. people are so feeble minded, they hear something catchy and bam – its their ‘opinion’.

i happen to have read herodotus and also frank millers 300.

im looking forward to the film. i have also seen the 1960’s version of ‘300’. its a typical swords and sandal film.

tales like this are important components of our history.

did anyone here know the anzacs also had a battle at thermopylae ?

its clear that someone has an anti-us agenda in criticising the film. how they do this im not sure. i googled a review of the 60’s film version which said that it depicted xerxes forces as ‘russians’. thats a depiction id not picked up on.

people need to perform their own analysis.

i guess when youre looking for a weapon to use on the enemy du jour, a film which is loosely based on an event from ancient history is a useful tool. your wildly inaccurate quote will generate attention. even if its propaganda.

in tirades like this i like to end with a quote from a philosopher from the 70s, a mr j. rotten “ever get the feeling youre being swindled?”

“How many times have you seen a standing ovation to a really good movie (some deserve it) in a standard movie screening.”

Who claps in a movie? maybe if you went to the world premeire, and the director and all the actors were in attendance. But at any other time its pointless, No one who cares can hear you except for other people who are clapping. No one is there to apreciate it so why waste your time?

sounds excruciatingly dull.

what the heck is house of heroes

oh, I should have mentioned… it’s all CGI crap. Been out here for a couple of weeks (and in the dodgy shops for a month)

The_Watcher: it isn’t a stretch to guess that the people with (sold out) preferred seating tickets will get all of the best seats.

bonfire: don’t know, haven’t seen it, just repeating what I’ve heard. Five seconds on Google should get you plenty of details.

Bah. Romans, Spartans, Persians – we trampled them all with our elephants.

They ran like f**k.

I hear it’s only amazing if you’re into extreme violence, right-wing politics, veiled homoeroticism, and progressively longer shouts of “Spaaaartaaaaaa!” Lots of testosterone.

Sounds almost like a meeting of Young Labor or the NSW Liberals…

Will this be another “Troy” where big Hollywood stars with the acting ability of a 4×2 lump of hoop pine get to wear skirts and carry swords?

So did the Carthaginians, just ask Hasdrubahl.

Apparently the Iranians aren’t that impressed with the depiction of Persians as child-eating monsters etc.

The Spartans loved a bit of drilling for mud… thought it was character building.

how is the battle of thermopylae ‘right wing politics’ and ‘homoeroticism’ ?

“paying extra for dodgy seats an at advance screening”

I’ll start by saying I’m going to this screening. I went to the Clerks II screening they did, and it was great fun.

Paying extra? It looks like it will cost me a whole $2.50 more then if i waited to go into a session with people who either don’t know squat about the story, or is filled with chatting teenagers.

Dodgy seats? Oh that’s right Hoyts rips out their comfy seats and puts in old primary school seats for special events.

I have found in the past that Advance screenings are usually far better than an in season screening. The people there, are there to see the movie, not just people who have decided to kill time by going to a movie. How many times have you seen a standing ovation to a really good movie (some deserve it) in a standard movie screening.
The fact that it has prizes and maybe a twit or 2 in costume is a bonus.

But hey, it’s just my opinion!

With all due deference to Blamemonkey’s mates, I hear it’s only amazing if you’re into extreme violence, right-wing politics, veiled homoeroticism, and progressively longer shouts of “Spaaaartaaaaaa!” Lots of testosterone.

Personally, I don’t see the point of paying extra for dodgy seats an at advance screening that only beats the regular season by four days.

i abhor the violence.

why cant we all just get along.

the should be a told in there somewhere….

Supposedly this Movie is awesome! I have it on fairly good authority (mates from the States) and I have been if you want to secure your manhood you will go and see the movie
