The ABC has a piece on a new novel by Frank Moorhouse called “Cold Light” set in 1950s Canberra:

Set in Canberra in the 1950s, ‘Cold Light’ finds Edith in the national capital after the collapse of the League of Nations.

The newly formed United Nations has rejected all those who worked and fought for the League, which included Edith.

Devastated and jobless, she begins to look for work in Canberra with ambitions to become Australia’s first female ambassador.

But the phones have been silent and so she finds herself caught up in the planning of the national capital.

No doubt the peoples of Manchuria and Eritrea would have wept for the plight of League of Nations employees exiled to Canberra.
