Fraser Court goes under the hammer

The Minister for Housing, John Hargreaves, has announced that a joint venture of Macquarie Bank and Lynsolo Pty Ltd have agreed to pay rather more than was expected for the deserted Fraser Court complex in Kingston.

“If the site had been sold two years ago for its book value, we would have been able to purchase 35 standalone, two bedroom dwellings, or construct 60 separate 2 bedroom dwellings, on land already owned by Housing ACT. We are now in a position to purchase 80, two bedroom dwellings or construct some 150, two bedroom dwellings.”

Apparently these hypothetical purchases will bump the public housing stock up over the all important target of 11,454.

Dunno… he was opposed to any private home ownership.

I hope the next to be pulled-down will be the Stuart Flats, near Manuka.

It’s only a mater of time I reckon. Same goes for all those hovels along Northbourne Ave.

Walter Griffin would turn in his grave if he knew that the main drag into Canberra had ugly concrete public housing apartments along quite a chunk of its length.

I hope the next to be pulled-down will be the Stuart Flats, near Manuka.

I agree, 11,454 is a magic number. All our problems will be solved when we hit that target.

The number that the Government has “committed to maintaining”. Interesting, God help the other tenants of the other more than 5,000 properties Housing own, I guess those ones don’t get any maintenance.

Agreed about kicking those who destroy properties or cause problems for neighbours out. If you don’t treat your house or neighbours correctly, you don’t deserve to live in one.

Mr Evil,

where do you suggest those that trash their public housing property move to?

The bush behind Ainslie Village

ainslie village! (shudder)

ever lived in act govt emergency accomodation?

try it some time. scariest place I have ever lived is ainslie village – definitely motivated me to get a job…

The bush behind Ainslie Village or the Aboriginal Tent Embassy are cheap options with good views and open spaces to let the rug rats run freely.

We could always go backwards and remove the students in Currong Flats and put them in there again, but that is not solving the problem.

Problem is that these people need to be taught how to live and if they can’t and keep destroying what my taxes (and yours too) pay for then it’s off to a chain gang to earn enough to pay for the damages they caused (will also have a spin off benefit of keeping the highways clean!).

Fantastic. Now the ACT Government has $80 million to go and further distort the local property market.

Watch out, some of these vagrants might be in your neighbourhood soon.

what do you mean, might?

got a few already. paying minimal rent, but working full time. great system.

They can sort that out for themselves: private rental properties spring to mind. It’s all part of that weird idea called being accountable for your actions.

Maybe after living under a tarp on a hillside for a few months, then they might be more appreciative of the things in life that they have previously taken for granted.

I’m talking here about the idiots who smash every window/door/wall in ‘their’ ACT Housing house/flat, or use the property as a storage area for car hulks or every bit of crap they’ve picked up at the tip – not someone who might accidentally knock a small hole in a wall once or twice during their tenancy.

Has the government learned yet that it is not a bright idea to create massive clumps of public housing – instant slums?

I look forward to the sale of the ghettoes that line Northborne Avenue. They must occupy very valuable real estate. The proceeds from their disposal, no doubt, would fund many, many public housing properties across the ACT.

Mr Evil,

where do you suggest those that trash their public housing property move to?

And if they ejected all the tenants who either shouldn’t have an ACT Housing property because of their current income and/or circumstances, or because they trash ‘their’ ACT Housing property, then that’d create another few thousand vacant homes for people who are more deserving and more eligible for an ACT Housing property in the first place.
