Fred Smith returns to Tilley’s after three years of touring on the North American circuit to launch his new CD “Texas”. “Smith is a superb songwriter with a wry sense of humour and a wonderful eye for the idiosyncrasies of modern life” – Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald, 17 November 2007.

Fred Smith is one of Australia’s most remarkable contemporary songwriters. He is the subject of a documentary film Bougainville Sky about his involvement in peace-keeping operations in the war-torn islands of the South Pacific where his work as a musician and radio broadcaster contributed to the success of the world’s first ever unarmed peace-keeping force.

Smith’s songs range from the deeply affecting, to the astringently observant, to the rousing sing-a-long. He has a perceptive eye for modern life, its foibles and joys, and an ability to express this in song. His live performances have earned descriptions from “Australia’s answer to Billy Bragg” to “Loudon Wainwright meets Noel Coward”.

Fred will be taking to the Tilley’s stage with his four piece band.

Thanks for the heads-up on the support line-up, blood-nut. I hadn’t actually heard of ‘The Whiff of Doom’ before, but that’s a killer act; three very fine singers/musicians in their own right(s).

“He is the subject of a documentary film Bougainville Sky about his involvement in peace-keeping operations in the war-torn islands of the South Pacific where his work as a musician and radio broadcaster contributed to the success of the world’s first ever unarmed peace-keeping force.”

Ouch – well-intentioned, but I know for a fact, having heard quite some goss from the spouse of one of them, that those in the peacekeeping force would not be pleased (though not surprised) to read an account of Fred Smith expressed in quite this way!

Ah, no, the Ellis Collective isn’t the support. The support act is ‘Whiff of Doom’.

In news just to hand, the pre-sale tickets for the Saturday show have sold out. There will be a limited number of tickets on sale at the door, but you’ll have to be there from 8pm.

Due to popular demand, Fred has just added a second show:

> 3pm, Sunday 11 May
> St John the Baptist Church, Constitution Ave, Reid
> Entry: $20 grown ups, $15 concession, kids under 10 free
> The hall at St Johns is a really beautiful space on an
> autumn afternoon with the sun streaming in from the windows. I’ll strip
> it back and play pretty acoustically around a single high quality
> microphone, with a few friends doing light instrumental backing.
Fred

sorry Bill. But almost as good. heh heh.

The Whiff Of Doom – comprising:

Stephen Taberner (evil puppetmaster of ‘Spooky Men’s Chorale’ fame)

and my favourites:

Sam ‘Ratman’ King
Emmah ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly

see you there…
