Local singer songwriter (and international man of mystery) Fred Smith has put out this missive:

Fred Smith will be taking the stage accompanied by his double bass playing performing partner Liz Frencham to launch his (already) highly acclaimed new album Dust of Uruzgan. The performance will be accompanied by projections of a remarkable set of photographic images from Afghanistan .

Early responses to pre-release copies and performances of Dust of Uruzgan:

“Every now and then you hear a song and you think to yourself “I wish I’d written that”. Fred Smith’s album Dust of Uruzgan is chock-a-block full of songs like that. If there is any justice in the world, this album will be a major hit..”
John Schumann (ex Redgum)

“The presence of Fred Smith over the weekend was the highlight. Why this man isn’t regarded as one of Australia ‘s best-known songwriters is beyond me. His new material based on his experiences in Afghanistan is powerful, his guitar playing is understated and his lyrics incisive, deft and challenging. One set saw him gain a standing ovation (in the middle of a set) which I’ve only witnessed two or three times in my 30 years of attending folks at festivals.”
Chris Spencer, Trad & Now, May 2011

I’m going to be launching it at the Playhouse in the Canberra Theatre Centre on Saturday 3 September. I have a big show planned with Liz Frencham, a band and some images projected onto the massive screen behind the stage at the Playhouse – the most intimate 600 seater I’ve ever played, not that I’ve played a lot of 600 seaters. Booking details below.

I’ve had an advance copy of the CD for a few days now and can vouch that it’s absolutely haunting and for anyone that pays attention to world affairs a must listen for voices that have actually been at the pointy end.

who says private schools don’t produce thinking (dare I say sensitive) men?

my vague claim to fame is that I was part of the group that created and then embedded at commonplace Fred’s ‘nickname’. (not a great claim to fame, I admit)

Good one!

If ever you get to see the doco Bougainville Sky you’ll appreciate quite what sort of character ‘Fred’ is… a true legend. “Em now, bulmacow!” 😉

I agree. Haunting indeed and I’ll add rich with nuance and insight.
