Grill’d is opening up a new store in the Canberra Centre and I am full of excitement.

You should be too because they are offering up free burgers from 11am to 3pm this Wednesday (the 13th) and you should probably make sure to eat one.

Actually no scratch that, I will eat one. You’ll all just make the queue longer so um… forget I said anything.

At any rate I’m looking forwards to having a fancy burger. I hope Grill’d makes burgers as good as they say they do.

Well at least I hope they’re not really over priced and powerfully average.

Grill’d founder Simon Crowe said the Canberra Centre restaurant will more than satisfy the demand for healthy, convenient food options in the precinct.

“Grill’d is more than just a great tasting, healthy burger restaurant. We place a huge emphasis on offering a casual environment where people of all ages can enjoy a fresh and convenient meal with their friends and family,” he said.

“We currently have restaurants in Belconnen, Manuka and Woden however locals have been asking us to open another Grill’d in Canberra for a long time. This location is a perfect fit for Grill’d – we’re happy we will become part of the city scene and fill the burger-sized gap in the precinct.

“I encourage locals to come in next Wednesday and experience the Grill’d offering on us!”

I walked out there after midday and the line was already out the doors and around the corner of the building.

I admire the sneaky way they chose to minimise their losses from the free food, limiting it to sit down only automatically limits the free burgers to the number of people that can sit at the tables during the time limit. And people being what they are, although they were waiting anxiously in the line they’ll be happy to take their time once they’ve got their freebie instead of eating it fast and leaving, they may even order extra stuff to eat or drink and take their sweet time and bugger the rest.

So the business gets the publicity at a minimal cost.

It doesn’t hurt that at Grill’d you can buy yourself a pint sized bottle of Little Creatures to go with your burger either.

Still tempted to come into town, go to Guzman y Gomez, buy a burrito and come to the Canberra Center to watch the agitation levels slowly grow with the lines…

From what I have been told (not actually been out there and looked for myself) you could sit IN Guzman & Gomez & see the agitation the line is that long.

Grill’d burgers are the best burgers I have tasted in Canberra. (except for my mate Tommy’s burgers… Oh nom nom nom).

London Burgers – woeful, over priced. Bleh !
Brodburger – not worth the wait.
Local takeaways – too greasy.
Burger Edge – yet to try them.

I’m glad none of you like their burgers.. means the line tomorrow will be shorter. 🙂

that’s pretty accurate actually. london burgers (which i have eaten twice) are terrible – each time undercooked (while still being dry – how do they manage that?) and taste cheap

I can recall eating at London Burgers twice since the City store opened.. I haven’t tried Belconnen.

The first time – it was ok. We only ate there coz it was a few days after new years and it was about the only place open in the City, excluding the food courts. I’d already eaten at Grill’d a few times in Sydney – But there was no Grill’d in Canberra yet.

The second time was only a week or 2 ago. The patty was way too thick and undercooked. Quite tasteless too !

The free burgers are for eat in only, so I’m guessing there will quite a wait unless you start lining up at 9am. They do a pretty good burger though, I’ve been to the one in Woden a few times now.

Can’t really comment about the whole Brodburger v every other Canberra Burger joint, as I’ve only had Brodburger once and the most memorable part of that experience was the hour and a half wait.

Yeah i can’t see why brodburger was hyped sooo much. I guess they fill the void of the old school takeaway hamburger.
I’ve always been a bit more gourmet in my burgers. I do like London burgers and beer, but find the idea of reserving a seat or getting a seat sometimes annoying.

Grill’d have a good Satay chicken burger which I really quite like.

I tried Grilled when I lived in Belco. I was underwhelmed. The alarm bells started ringing when I noticed their blurb which said “we use healthy ingredients”.

If the ingredients were really healthy they’d run away before being made into a hamburger.

i like grill’d….i mean it’s not the best burger i have had (that honour goes to fergburger in NZ – seriously for burger lovers) but they’re good, fresh and the chips are yummy

someone mentioned that there isn’t much competition anymore and that is pretty true – corner shops with good burgers are a dying breed

oh and i don’t like brodburger on any level (food is overrated and the service is atrocious)…so grill’d wins for me

Their salad is great. First time I’ve never felt hungry after eating a salad.

The days of the local fish and chip shop doing a great burger with a juicy and well seasoned home made patty are gone.

In Canberra it is anyway. On a couple of recent trips to Melbourne for work I was blessed with great suburban takaway burgers.

It’s been a while since I’ve had one, but Watson Take Away never missed a beat when looking for an old school hamburger with the lot.

I like Grill’d. I like Brodburger.

Methinks some people expect too much from a burger if they’re not finding something very pleasing in at least one of those options.

I agree, I had a Grilled burger in Melbourne (never had one here as there has never been an outlet close to me) & throughly enjoyed it. I would probably nearly have one over a Brodburger because they dont have the 60 minute wait.

brodburger s***z all over grill’d. dry and tasteless. Plus their chips are woeful.

Why were you sampling the sh1t that Brodburger did all over grill’d to know it was dry and tasteless?

Perhaps that had something to do with how woeful the chips were afterwards?

Unfortunately that is true. Grill’d is only ‘good’ because they have no competition.

The days of the local fish and chip shop doing a great burger with a juicy and well seasoned home made patty are gone.

Most now use frozen pre-made burgers and generic home-brand bread rolls .

I can make my own at home but they never have the flavour of meat from a take-away grill that has been cooking burgers for a decade.

Better than most take aways now days.

Same, had a few at Woden.

Abysmal.

Tasteless.
