The President of the Law Society of the ACT, Martin Hockridge, has today announced free advice sessions on wills and powers of attorney that will be run as part of ACT Law Week.

“Many people either don’t realise how important it is to have a will, or they think they can leave it until later,” said Mr Hockridge.

“But the fact is that ‘until later’ can easily turn into ‘too late’. Everyone should have a will, particularly if you have a family or other dependants, and especially if you are a separated or unmarried parent.”

Advice on wills and enduring powers of attorney

During ACT Law Week, the Elder Law Committee of the Law Society in association with Communities@Work will run will awareness information sessions for members of the public.

These information sessions are aimed at people without a legal background. Speakers will explain the importance of having a current will and a power of attorney, and provide the information needed to make an informed decision about these important documents.

Two of these information sessions will be run, and bookings are essential.

  • Session 1 will be held on Wednesday 13 May, commencing at 11am, in the Balcony Room, Tuggeranong Community Centre, 245 Cowlishaw Street, Greenway.
  • Session 2 will be held on Thursday 14 May, commencing at 11.45am, Function Room, Gungahlin Community Centre, 47 Ernest Cavanagh Street, Gungahlin.

Book a place by contacting sarah.smith@commsatwork.org.

Help drafting a will

The Legal Advice Bureau, which has been offering free legal advice to the public for more than 30 years, will run a special Wills Day during Law Week. Anyone who’d like advice on how to set up their Will can make a free 30-minute appointment with one of our qualified solicitors.

Appointments for the Wills Day are available between 11am and 2pm on Friday 15 May 2015. To make an appointment, contact the Law Society on (02) 6274 0300.

This is a great opportunity if you haven’t quite gotten around to making a will.

A lot of people think that particularly if they are younger or don’t have many assets that they don’t need a will, but through things like insurance or superannuation death benefits you could be worth more than you thought.

Significantly, you will save your loved ones a lot of grief at a time they have enough already by putting a will in place – and some free advice to get the ball rolling is a great place to start.
