Territory And Municipal Services are letting us know that if you’ve bought new land, and have any sort of garden to put plants in, you can get $220 worth of plants from the Yarralumla Nursery.

“Under the ACT Government?s Plant Issue Scheme, Canberrans who have purchased a new residential block of land in the ACT are entitled to an allocation of plants from the Yarralumla Nursery to the value of $220.

“With the ACT?s ever-growing population spreading into new suburbs such as Bonner, Casey and Wright, we want to encourage new landowners to maintain Canberra?s scenic beauty and reputation as the “Garden City?.

“Residents in the ACT are encouraged to take advantage of this initiative to beautify their new home and suburb.”

Mr Godfrey said that Yarralumla Nursery specialises in cold climate garden plants suitable to the ACT, rare and threatened plants, tube stock for rural plantings and bird attracting plants.

“All the plants sold at Yarralumla Nursery are grown on site by the production side of the Nursery. This allows Canberrans to access an extremely wide range of locally grown plants suitable for our climate.

Apparently you can still collect the plants up to two years after the date of the land purchase agreement.

wow free plants….. when you spend several hundred thousand on the block of land

When the bank spends several hundred thousand on a block of land you mean.

“…and have any space between your house and your fence” leaves out anyone who lives in Gungahlin or any of the Little Gungahlins that are springing up like noxious weeds around the ACT.

Either call for measures that will force the land values down or stop whingeing about people buying smaller blocks that they can afford. As you probably can afford to own a large block, you most likely don’t want to do the first.

Got mine a couple of weekends ago. The nursery next door has better selections and more variety, but i got about enough to plant in my front yard so cant complain. thanks TAMS and ACTGOV.

Would have thought with the block and house sizes these days the plants would be better replaced with a free load of concrete! And yes this scheme has been around for a very very long time.

I remember it used to be x number of shrubs and x number of trees.

Yep, has been around forever. But I suppose it needs to be promoted now.

Looking forward to getting mine next year. Though $220 won’t get you anywhere near enough plants to fill a front and backyard, It is infinitely better than nothing!

well, looking at the size of some of the “yards” in bonner, etc. i wouldn’t be so sure…

True. Mine in Casey will be pretty small too. But I think I won’t do lawn, so can still fit quite a few plants in.

I think when the people in my area got their free plants back in the 1950s it must have been fruit trees, agapanthus and cotoneaster. Lots of cotoneaster. ‘Yes, it’ll grow fast and the birds love it.’ None of this native stuff back then, boyo.

Hasn’t this deal been going since Adam was a boy? We were able to do this at our place in Nicholls 10 years ago.
