I am well aware of the prostitution of FOI that has gone on, but my query was why do we even need to go through that process ?

If say, a computer prog was written and run at an administrator level within a departments intranet, to simply copy files after a certain date into a publicly avaliable directory – would that be so hard ?

I’d love to be able to Google up whatever it was I was looking for…

Obviously current information is a different kettle of fish, and would require some level of human interaction to obtain, and I’ve seen most of lanternlight’s link in action where I work right now. (We have a member of staff who attracts FOI requests a little like flies to shit)

c’mon Mael, you have only to answer the question to know the answer.

If in doubt read lanternlight’s link. the glorious concept of freedom of information, like many of our other great institutions, has been utterly prositututed by the political classes that claim to represent us.

What’s the deal with FOI anyway ?

Why can’t they just dump the information into a huge internet repository and allow the peoples of the nation to sift through the lot at their own discretion ?

Why does it require somebody officially asking for information, to coin a response ?

All of this information (in most departments I have worked for at least) is merely one step away from being online anyway, the move to put all of the information online would not be too hard to complete.

I’m well aware of the Australian and its commitment to Freedom of Information. But how many other media organisations have a dedicated FoI editor?

FOI is a lot of time and effort,

Or Maybe Google Fight

There seem to be relatively few media organisations in Australia which use FoI with any kind of frequency, possibly because of the associated costs.

Have you forgotten that The Australian employs a FOI editor?
