Friday 8 February 2008 – Frencham/Smith at the Merry Muse

Frencham-Smith are Liz Frencham (Jigzag, Dev’lish Mary), and Fred Smith (Fred Smith) together in a unique collaboration which blends Liz Frencham’s voice and double-bass with the internationally acclaimed song-writing of Fred Smith. With Liz’s earthy warmth and Fred’s sharp wit, these two consummate performers take their audience on a trip full of humour and heart through life’s little ironies. They have released two acclaimed albums together and are a major force in the Australian folk scene.

There is no other folk duo in Australia that comes close to their magical combination. Sydney Morning Herald, 2007.

Special Guest: the New York Public Library
Sydney-based band the
New York Public Library have been delighting audiences for over 30 years with their unique mix of hard driving bluegrass rhythms, closely blended three-part harmony and spontaneous madcap humour. Although they use a line-up of traditional bluegrass instruments (five-string banjo, mandolin, guitars and string bass) the Library don’t limit themselves to one music genre, switching happily from bluegrass to folk, to contemporary country to the inspired lunacy of a Samba that went very, very wrong.

The Merry Muse at the Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David Street, Turner. Thursday 24 January. Doors 6.30pm, support 8pm, main act 9pm. $15/$12. www.merrymuse.org.au

Fred & Liz are terrific.

Fred is one of the great contemporary songwriters

Fred’s one of my favourite performers ever! Soapbox is my favourite CD. And “Open Country” is one of the best Australian songs ever written. Fred Smith rools!!
