Vege Box

Hello Canberra,

Some of you already know me. I’m James, founder of MetroFarms Pty Limited (MetroFarms), a new Canberra-based company.

MetroFarms will be Canberra’s new local farm and we seek to set a new standard for sustainable farming in Australia.

If vegetable flavour and nutrition matter to you and your families, you want vegetables to be their absolute freshest and you want a true local alternative to major supermarket vegetables farmed who knows where, then speak up now!

In the near future, MetroFarms will farm, package and deliver the freshest vegetables direct to your door. But first, we need to start our proof of concept operations and trial our vegetable offerings and delivery services with real customers.

Why choose MetroFarms?
– We will farm our vegetables under controlled conditions all year round
– Our standard for fresh vegetables: Harvest to your home in 3 hours, all grown in Canberra
– Our farming methods are pesticide free and sustainable

To participate in the market trial at proof of concept stage, you must:
– Live in Canberra or a surrounding suburb
– Be willing to leave feedback on vegetable selection, quality and convenience
– Like the idea of truly fresh and tasty vegetables delivered direct to your door

Is this somehow linked to the NDIS?

No, the vegetable delivery you are thinking of is carried out by the Mullies, sadly.

Is this somehow linked to the NDIS?

Good idea where about,s in Canberra are these veggies being grown?

why, you wanna go at it with a whipper snipper?

Well, no self-respecting northsider would ever eat an inferior southside carrot, would they?

That’s because it’s already jammed up their arse.

what would you get in a box this week? im interested, any big beautiful red Capsicum like the picture? I don’t think you can grow a wide enough variety through the winter to make this work. Also 3 hours from pick to delivery will only work if you making less than 10 deliveries or have massive numbers of delivery drivers.

Good luck with it, Im sure you will be able to sell most Canberrans produce fresh from Flemington markets, for a few years before they figure it out. People manage to do it at the farmers Markets every weekend

Thanks for the comment.

We think we can pull it off without supplying produce from the Flemington markets 😉 As for the rest, anyone who knows me will tell you I don’t shy away from a challenge…

We are looking to start growing this winter and start delivering our veggies in the spring. We also intend to grow a wide vegetable selection all through the year.

Regards,

James

Good Luck James.According to the latest health information one can extend their life by eating a mostly vego diet, Hope you grow some Kale.

I tried to find a website for these guys, but seemingly none exists. Need more info.

Why not change your thinking and plan a menu around what you get instead of shopping for what you plan.. Or is Tuesday night lasagne night, uncompromised.. hehe

Did you not actually read what I wrote? I tried one of these schemes back in Blighty, I stuck with it for the best part of a year. After a while you I ran out of “creative” methods of using the same, (eg. spinach,) ingredient and the taste of it becomes wearisome. It also becomes wasteful, as what is delivered will be left unused due to being over familiar. I’m not saying this is a bad scheme, I ‘d just be interested in seeing how they will deliver variety.

Ps. I can’t stand lassagne.

We’ll have to come up with a way of injecting variety to keep you interested in our offerings 😉

Mrs Deref and I probably don’t use enough veggies to participate in the trial, but it sounds like a great idea. Good luck with it.

You couldn’t get through a box of veggies? Depending on the volume, I’m probably looking at getting 2 boxes per week.. We go through a lot of veggies in this house.. (2 adults, 1 child)

This really sounds like my sort of thing. I eat mostly vegetables these days.

Does it include fruit?

Not likely during our proof of concept scale operations, where the market trials will be run.
Cheers,
James

Would like to know about the intended selections/range of choice available first.

I had a similar experience back in Blighty, started off good, but fund myself bored with getting the same stuff week in week out, “in season.”

My reason for not using these services is that you get what is picked rather than being able to choose. Not saying we should be able to buy mangoes in Winter, but at the same time I don’t want bucket loads of something if we don’t eat them.

I tried to find a website for these guys, but seemingly none exists. Need more info.

Thanks for the comments. We plan to have our initial website up and running in the next couple weeks. Our domain is http://www.metrofarms.net.au.

Regards,

James

As much as I love lasagne, particularly my own, no, Tuesday or any other night is not dedicated towards any specific meal. We only ensure that we eat two fish, one vego and mainly white meat on the other days if I am unable to persuade Monsieur Cholet into another vege meal!

My point though was that, for example, we wouldn’t really eat avocados so would have no reason to buy them. Quite happy to work around seasonally available, but not going to force feed myself or waste money on things I detest. Everyone of a certain age will remember the gut wrenching feeling of having to eat something at school that they didn’t like. Peas in my case!

This really sounds like my sort of thing. I eat mostly vegetables these days.

Awesome. I’m in 🙂

Wow, what an operation, very impressive. I’m sure this’ll get off the ground, people should be jumping on it (I grow my own stuff and follow the seasons).
