Facebook is abuzz that there will be some sort of announcement about the future of the recently axed Fringe Festival at 12.15 in Civic Square (in front of the Canberra Theatre) this lunchtime.

So, if you’re one of our many readers who quite liked the old format, it would be a good time to shift your lunch break around and get down there to show your support.

If they had their act together, the govt would incorporate their new public holiday with one of their festivals and give us all a decent long weekend, with something to do as well.

Stanhope had his ‘it’s a complex and competitive tendering process’ voice on the news tonight in response to Jorian’s prospects for getting any funding in a new festival planned for Autumn next year (lead up to the centenary).

I’m not a big Jorian fan, but I really hope this does well, just to show the government they can’t ban all the fun in town.

Hmm so we cut one festival because of cost blowouts, chop a bit off it and tack it onto another where no one wants it and now there is a “new” festival announced for a similar time frame. Hmmm. Why not just make the Fringe announced today the “new” festival and give them the money.

When was the public consulted about joining the Fringe with the folk festival that costs, what, $80 a day to attend? What’s “Fringe” about that? Or can “Fringe” entrants have a dedicated cheap entry and promise not to attend the ethnic dancing (hey, surely the multicultural festival would have been better absorbed by the Folk?) If the burlesque was the issue, it would have been very easy to make the funding contingent on “no adult material”.

But they are committed to the folk festival plan for the next 3 years no matter what.

AND they are planning an additional festival straight after the new fringe festival in civic, only they don’t know what sort of festival they’d like yet, so they are going to ask around for ideas. (last para of the article above).

sigh.

Yeah, I’d be unimpressed if they put a photo like that up of me…

But yeah, this plan makes a lot more sense then the folk festival one.

A partnering with Corinbank would make a lot of sense (so long as Corinbank are right on board, and if they were, I’m sure they’d jointly schedule at a time that doesn’t compete with the main event).

Is it just me or does Jorian look a bit like Popeye in that photo ?

I like the new plan, it makes much more sense than the Folk Festival plan.

Seems they’ve already announced what the future will be. Today ABC news reports:

So looks like it will be an in-town part of Corinbank. Cool.
