This was the first year Frocktober has been held in Canberra and local support surpassed our hopes and expectations.

Frocktober is a festive fundraising initiative raising money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). Established in 2007, Frocktober puts forward a challenge to girls, women and interested men everywhere: don a frock for a day, week, fortnight or a full month during October, and get sponsored for it!

We kicked off the month with our launch at O’Malley’s and from there it was full steam ahead into “An Evening Frocktacular” fashion show of local designers, presented by Thoroughbred Park, with Roller Derby girls, Canberra fashionistas and all round fabulous people. Our frockettes hit Tilley’s, North Bar, Double Happiness at Old Parliament House and Hotel Realm each Friday to promote the cause and raise funds. We got our ‘Eat Pray Love’ on at Hoyts Belconnen thanks to Bliss Key Communication, where frockettes and some brave frockafellas enjoyed popcorn, drinks and imagining trips to Rome, India and Bali (in fab frocks, of course). Finally we held a fabulous finale party at Flint Dining Room, selling some amazing auction items, accompanied by great live music from AJ & Jacinta and Little Sister.

Our ambassadors Senator Gary Humphries, Senator Kate Lundy, the Hon Gai Brodtmann MP and WIN newsreader Danielle Post offered terrific support in promoting the charity around Canberra.

Canberrans held fashion line launches, morning teas, golf days and school bake sales, cafes donated their tips, and party plan sales people donated their commissions: the generosity of the community has been simply breath taking.

We aimed to raise $10 000 over the month but as of 31 October 2010, we had raised $34 000! The donations keep coming in too (and can still be made at our Everyday Hero website until 7 November)!

This could not have been achieved without you, the Canberra community: frockettes, frockafellas, sponsors, ambassadors, departments, businesses, organisations, community groups. We have loved working with all of you on this frockin’ good cause and look forward to making 2011 even bigger and better!

If you’d like to be involved next year, please email us at frocktobercanberra@gmail.com and remember to keep an eye on our blog www.frocktobercanberra.blogspot.com

Indeed, a good way to raise funds. There are some rather attractive women there. I wonder if they are all married? 😉

Congratulations to all involved!
