The Courier Mail has the surprising news that Raiders’ coach David Furner is not a protected species after all:

A CRISIS Canberra board meeting has ended with David Furner offering his resignation as Raiders head coach.

Furner has been given the chance to resign with dignity after a nine-player revolt indicated they could no longer work with the coach.

“It’s obviously a results driven game and we have lost our last three game,” he siad. “It’s still terribly disappointing after all the work I’ve point in.”

Relations between the coach and leading players at the club, including much of the senior leader group, have deteriorated in recent weeks, coming to a head following the Raiders disappointing loss to Canterbury on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood the players held a private meeting last night where it was decided they could no longer believe they can work with Furner.

It was the second gathering of players in days.

UPDATE: The Club’s statement is now online:

Raiders board decision on Coach David Furner

The Canberra Raiders Board of Directors has made a decision on the future of the clubs Head Coaching role, deciding to terminate the contract of Raiders Coach David Furner effective immediately.

The board made the tough decision feeling the team’s inconsistent performances were not reflective of the talent within the squad and have decided to pursue a different direction for the future of the club.

The board noted the wonderful service over many years that David Furner has made to the club from his days as a player and more recently a coach and said he will leave his tenure at the club as one of the Raiders most loyal and respected figures.

They noted the difficulty in the decision and said it was one of the saddest days in the clubs history.

Andrew Dunemann will take over as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2013 season.

The board will take the time necessary to appoint the best Head Coach for the club.

If the rumours about ferguson, dugan etc etc are true and he was soft on them, then maybe he is part of that problem. I like Furner, but the one issue, I’ve always had has been the consistency and the fact that such a good team can put in so many bad performances. To me thats part of the coaches job to keep a team motivated and playing to the best standard each week. Yeah he isn’t out their dropping the ball etc, but its his responsibility to keep them motivated and playing their best. The good sides in the comp, have a bad game once every 4-5 games. Raiders seem to have one every game or 2 and often several in a row.

Furner has got the can
To make way for the Dun… um, I won’t finish it 😀

It’s about time. The nepotism in the club was causing serious detriment to the team. When the CEO is his brother, and when the Chairman was quoted last year or the year before saying he’d never sack a guy whose nappies he used to change, how can you operate a club where your coach is such a protected species?

The Raiders only go forward from here, I’m excited to see what’s to come.

About time, I feel for the after burner Furner, but the green machine need a new direction

Hey…Ltdttm…cool…how could I not like a handle like that? 🙂

Oh…ahh…football…yeah…ummm…if the players are getting together as a big meaty brainless blob and still manage to conclude that they can’t work with the coach, then it probably really is time for him to go.

Was painful to see Furner out there dropping the ball, missing tackles, giving away penalties and giving up when the score started to get away.

That was Furner…..wasn’t it?

Good point.

On the other hand, as happy as I am that I get to see the mighty Sea-Eagles play in Canberra this Sunday (it’s been a while), I think if ever there was a time that the Raiders will be fired-up…

Well haven’t both Furner and Tricky Ricky had a year they’d love to forget..

Having seen my team concede 96 points at home over the last two home games I was seriously going to give my membership away for next season, I don’t mind losing narrowly but conceding that many points over 2 games indicates a serious problem. Fingers crossed the Board come up with an inspired appointment to rekindle the faith.
