We’ve been alerted of yet more upcoming road closures, in Fyshwick this time, from Monday August 6th to Friday August 12th.

The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that the southbound on-ramp to the Monaro Highway from Newcastle Street will be closed from
6 am Monday 6 August 2012 to 6 pm Sunday 12 August 2012.
The closure is to allow for road works associated with Monaro Highway duplication project.
Barriers as well as warning and diversion signs will be erected to alert people of the closure.

hopefully when it’s complete they’ll extend the 100 zone through to the Morshead intersection rather than keep it the ridiculously low 80 it is now.

It’s more likely that the standard Canberra solution will apply: reduce the existing 100 zones back to 80.

I could not understand it when they closed the other bridge and ripped it up when they opened the first new bridge.

maybe the old bridge was at the end of its life?

Shit it’s all of 30 years old we better replace just in case it collapses!

I could not understand it when they closed the other bridge and ripped it up when they opened the first new bridge.

I assumed it had something to do with the heights of the older bridges not being the same as the new ones and they needed to make them the same height to allow safe passage for taller Semi trailers to get through.

I thought the duplication was supposed to be finished by now?

There can’t be much left to do, at this point.

Well if they intend to rip out the other bridge then it will be well into 2013 before this stretch of roadwork will be completed.

The thing that frustrated me was that when that stretch of the Monaro Hwy was being extended back in the 80’s it quickly became apparent that it was only a single lane extension which made absolutely no sense. But then again that’s always been pretty much the norm in this city!

Surely not. I had heard (on RiotACT I think) that the road works were due for completion in August. I’d have thought another few weeks at the most. Hopefully.

It will be interesting to see how completion changes traffic flow near the airport and into the city, as the natural chokepoint will be removed, allowing a greater volume of cars to get to the end of the Monaro Hwy.

That may be so however like every other roadwork project undertaken in Canberra quick completion has always been a low priority.

Hope it catches out some of the numpties that try to get ahead by taking the exit only to drive back up the on-ramp every evening.

I thought the duplication was supposed to be finished by now?
