An artist's impression of Canberra's light rail.

I’ve just been surveyed by Galaxy re light rail and voting intentions re the election, and one of the questions was very interesting.

Whichever side of politics commissioned the poll, is gauging whether people who are anti light rail and planning to vote Liberal “normally lean toward Labor”.

I haven’t struck that question before in an election poll, and I’ve gleaned from the questioning, that one side is optimistic and/or one side is pessimistic that normally rusted-on Labor voters might well be p*ssed off enough to abandon their party in October, and the party commissioning the poll is needing to devise strategies or self-congratulate, depending who it is!

I think it’s a reasonable question in this town, since the previously understood proportions of labour, liberal and ‘swing’ voters may not apply. I also think the tram issue (in combination with the rate rises that are being used to fund them) are significant enough to change votes, certainly it has changed my intentions for this specific election.

Love the diagram. It seems to show buildings built right to the roadside (that’s going to look charming along Northbourne!), and no vehicle lanes. I know this Assembly is anti cars, but NONE?

Only people receiving government payments have time or bother to answer these stupid polls .

An interesting question, but a little difficult to see the point this close to the election, when Labor, Green and Liberal have all made their views on the trams very clear – particularly after the recent announcement about a line to Woden.

Sounds like push polling to me.

Could it not just as easily be one of the Unions backing the LR project and not the Libs (as denied just above) or Labor/Greens either?

I can confirm that (1) that’s not a poll commissioned by the Canberra Liberals (2) we don’t use Galaxy and (3) it is a somewhat unusual form of follow-on question which, which ironically gives rise to obvious questions from an outside observer. Over to others to explain. D Clode (Campaign Director)
