The Australian National University informs us they’re hosting the Imagine Cup Game Camp this weekend:

The Imagine Cup Game Camp, hosted by the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science, is a free two-day games development workshop. The event is part of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup and will include a speaker from Microsoft to lead participants through the steps in making a computer game.

The event will also include industry guest speakers from local game studios in Canberra. At the end of the two days prizes will be awarded.

There’s a dedicated page for it. Apparently you can just rock up, but they’d appreciated registrations for catering purposes.

Geek weekends are cool

Bring back Leisure Suit Larry….

…but the whole point is that a bunch of people were excited, thought this might be an awesome opportunity, and then read the fine print, realised it sucks and were disappointed. And aren’t turning up of their own accord, just as you suggest.

I don’t see what’s wrong with telling others that it’s not as good a deal as it might seem at first glance. A Reiki information evening can be free too.

I like how you guys are complaining about a completely FREE weekend. The event is targeted at students, specifically CS students at the ANU, and it is still a good opportunity for them.

“Just a fly trap to get people into AIE”, really? This doesn’t even make sense. “oooh we want people to go the AIE, lets host an event at the ANU and try convince people to go the AIE via a half hour talk!”

Sure its an ad for Microsoft, but who cares? Its still free, some people might learn something, and a lot of people will get prizes. What is there to be so negative about? If you don’t like it. Don’t turn up.

I guess haters gonn’ hate.

Well it will let you test your game on the new windows phone 7 so for me, I’m next door to Chem Theatre on Saturday, Might just be a way to try out the new phone, plus if not many people turn up you might just win an xbox 🙂

Although I agree it’s basically an ad for XNA Game Studio.
Anyone up for LAN gaming night saturday, they didn’t say what games did they but mentioned with 2K marin we can see borderland multiplayer(YAY!)

So are we going to spill truth on AIE here or does that get a new thread…?

Yeah, this is a real shame.
Could have been a fantastic opportunity for a Canberra game jam; Instead it’s just part of a thinly veiled campaign by Microsoft clambering to save the future of Windows Mobile with its unpopular, backwards framework.

Don’t even get me started on AIE.

This is just a fly trap to get people into AIE..

You know.. AIE.. that place parents with too much cash send their full time WoW addicted kids thinking it’s a good investment and little Johnny thinks he’s going to come out of there and lead development of the next Halo game.

The way this works is the parents rock up with their kids (who think game development is a great career), the kids make a basic game and a mentor/facilitator says “Your little Johnny is really skilled at 3d game animation”, the parent then nurtures this wonderful skill by providing metric tons of cash to the AIE.

As for the poster.
“…making a game over the course of the two period.” ??

What the flyer doesn’t tell you is that in order to use the XNA Studio game dev program thing, you need to know a particular programming language… this isn’t for ‘everyone’, this is for ‘people who already know how to program’.

Also, I find it hilarious how they say “you’ll ACTUALLY make a GAME! omgwtf” Making games isn’t hard, it’s making good games that’s the challenge, and this seems more of an ad for XNA than an actual game development workshop.

*shrug* I’m sure the target demographic will enjoy it greatly.
