[ED (Ntp) – Below is what appears to be a full press release from the ACT Liberal Party. IBN News has an abridged version here and also a item on Sen. Humphries dig at the politital lobby group GetUp!]

ACT Senator Gary Humphries has been endorsed to lead the ACT Liberals’ Senate campaign in the coming Federal election, Party President Gary Kent announced today.

Senator Humphries, who has represented the ACT in the Senate since 2003, was pre-selected unopposed as the lead Senate Candidate at a meeting of ACT Liberal Party members last night. Political newcomer Jacqui Myers will join Gary as the second Senate candidate, placing the ACT Liberals in a very strong position for the coming campaign.

“Gary Humphries has been an excellent representative of the Liberal Party and a tireless advocate for the people of the ACT since moving to Federal politics in 2003” , Mr Kent said.

“With Gary Humphries’ experience and strong local knowledge, and the energy and enthusiasm of Jacqui Myers, we have put together a winning team to fight the battle ahead.”

Senator Humphries thanked the party for supporting his nomination, saying: “I feel very privileged to have had to the opportunity to represent the ACT and the Liberal Party over the past four years, and I am honoured that the party membership has again chosen me to lead the ACT Liberals’ campaign.

“The risks to Canberrans from a change of Federal Government are greater than ever before; that risk is what the Liberal senate team will be working hard to highlight in the coming months.

“I have worked hard to protect and promote the interests of Canberra on such issues as the local economy, jobs, education, health and the environment, and I will continue to ensure Canberra’s voice is heard where it matters if elected for another term.

“I welcome Jacqui to the campaign trail, and look forward to working with her throughout the coming months. I know she brings with her a solid understanding of local issues, a concern for the wellbeing of Canberra and its citizens, and a real enthusiasm for political life,” Senator Humphries said.

Small business owner Jacqui Myers has lived in Canberra for over 20 years and has forged many strong relationships during that time. Having only joined the ACT Liberals in 2006, Jacqui has quickly proven herself to be a keen and passionate campaigner, having worked on the election campaigns of Troy Williams, Natalie Colbert, Pru Goward and David Madew.

“I am pleased to have been chosen to represent the Liberal Party in the coming campaign, and am very grateful to the party membership for giving me the chance to make a difference for Canberra,” Jacqui said.

“This is a big role to take on, but I believe very strongly in the values and ideals of the Liberal Party, and am proud to play a role in promoting these to the people of Canberra.”

all political systems are fcked! Except for mine.

“your thinly veiled relationship with the Labor party is hilarious…”

Sounds like the call of a Liberal Party stooge.

I’m ambidextrous.

It is my fervent wish that both Keating and Howard pre-decease me so I can dance on their graves.

So does anyone know much more about the Libs’ second Senate candidate, Jacqui Myers? I’m curious to get some wider insight about her other than just some wish-wash about her ‘energy and enthusiasm’….

GetUp! is ‘progressive’, according to its website.

I am thinking that a common trait of its members would be being disillusioned with the Libs.

Does being disillusioned with one party necessarily make it a front for any other party? Especially when Australians’ voting habits are so often based on voting someone OUT, rather than voting someone IN?

Yawn, just keeping playing the man guys.

I didn’t dissemble about Bill Shorten, he’s not on the board, end of story.

I haven’t voted for Labor since 98 and I have no problem with Capitalism, just the fundamentalist form of it.

How quickly it moves from being a Labor front to a Greens one.

… and perhaps Pierce is being less than complete with the truth.

Bill Shorten was a member until recently and environmental lefty Cate Faehrmann still is.

With a platform of “social justice” they sure look like a front for the greens.

Hi Pierce,

your thinly veiled relationship with the Labor party is hilarious – just so you are aware – after not so much research I have discovered that Bill Shorten was a member of “GetUp!” and resigned just before he was preselected..

Pierce – if a free market lovin world isn’t your style – China is a communist country….

Perhaps Senator Gazbag might try playing the ball rather than the man next time he lines up against GetUp!.

Bill Shorten is not on the board and there are also community organisers, company directors and entrepreneurs, which seems a reasonable cross section for an organisation like this.

As to the implication that information from Labor must necessarily be held as suspect because they are involved in the political process, this is clearly absurd.

Perhaps you are getting confused with the sorry record of shifting truths and “I can’t remember”s and “I wasn’t informed”s from the Liberal Government over the last 11 years.

I have participated in some GetUp! campaigns because they meshed with my view of the world and others I have ignored.

It is the issues that most GetUp! members are drawn by, not mindless partisanship and particularly not power-mad neo-conservative free-market fanatacism.
