Garbage fire near the airport

The ACT Fire Brigade is on scene this afternoon at a rubbish pile fire at Majura.

Six ACT Fire Brigade units and one aviation appliance from the nearby airport are working to extinguish the fire at a concrete recycling plant adjacent to Glenora Drive.

The rubbish pile is mainly made up of used timber.

Firefighters continue to pull the rubbish pile apart to reach the centre of the fire to fully extinguish it.

The pile is approximately 8 metres high.

ACT Fire Brigade continuing to fully extinguish a smouldering pile of mulch.

Estimated size of pile between 1000 and 1200 cubic metres.

Crews worked throughout the night and are expected to complete operations by midday today.

ACT Fire Brigade continuing to extinguish smouldering pile of mulch.

Due to the nature of the location, operations are tedious and the seed of the fire is difficult to locate.

Crews will remain on site until fire is fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire has been determined as spontaneous combustion.

Damn, they should’ve fed the fire instead. It could’ve become Canberra’s “big thing”. Like the tyre fire in The Simpsons.
