The Australian National University has let it be known that former Labor Foreign Minister Gareth Evans will continue as the Chancellor.

Vice-Chancellor Ian Young AO said:

“I am very pleased that ANU Council has approved the renewed term, and that Professor Evans has agreed to continue to serve us as Chancellor.

“Professor Evans makes an invaluable contribution to ANU in many ways, but especially in positioning ANU as Australia’s leading public policy institute.

“Gareth also works tirelessly in Australia and around the world to raise the profile of, and generate support for, this great institution. He has contacts, reach and respect, and is an asset to ANU.

Well I can’t say I’ve seen pretty much anything that he’s done in this role during his term to date. Have I missed something that’s warranted an extension?

At least Chubb was actively campaigning in the community—something he is doing even more of now in his role as Chief Scientist…

Kevin Rudd is not ready for the ANU/Labor sinecure yet – in the meantime, Gareth is keeping the seat warm for Rudd.

I believe that he has a very good throwing arm…………..and maybe he’s hoping that if he stays at the ANU long enough he’ll get a gold ashtray?

We must know the same people. 🙂

My story about GE is not as juicy as LSWCHP’s tennis friend – but I used to purchase his stationery back in the day – and he had to use specific pentel pens, which were the most expensive pen you could buy in the 80s. There was no such thing as budget when he was in charge….ah the good old days LOL

Used to know in the biblical sense? Was there any begatting? And share the stories pls….

She was very attractive, but sadly I only played tennis with her. See my recent post about sexual disappointment, wry smiles and buying beer. 🙂

I’d like to spread the love about Gareth, but I suspect that most of the stories would get RA sued into oblivion. Let’s just say that the the very calm, low key , softly spoken and disciplined public persona isn’t the whole truth.

I used to know a woman worked for then Senator Evans. Goodness, gracious me, the stories she told…

I used to see Gareth regularly at nosheries in Manuka and Kingston about 20 years ago – he liked his tucker then and judging by his portly presence now (he looks like the “before person” in a Gut Busters ad) he is still enjoying the long lunch. He is certainly holding his own with his predecessors Beazley and Chubb.
He looked grand in his academic regalia handing out diplomas to ANU graduates recently. None of the graduates I spoke with knew much of his past life and they certainly hadn’t heard of Keryl Chernot.
Those days have been airbrushed from memory but details are still on Wikepedia.
