ANU students of the LGBTI — lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex — persuasion may be interested to know about the upcoming Gay Pride Week, 17-21 May.

Under the theme of “Come so far; so far to go” (no giggling please), ANU students will celebrate the positive advances made in recent years, while committing to making the campus a centre for inclusion and progress in LGBTI matters.

Events will include a campus Fun day, a Movie night, a “Coming out” workshop, a Campus debate on LGBTI issues, a Letter-writing campaign, a “Crafternoon”, a “Gays through History” Bar night, a Vigil for victims of homophobia (hosted by Amnesty International), and a discussion with the openly-gay ACT minister, Andrew Barr MLC.

Further event details to be announced via the Facebook group, click here.

A parade is what we need! And floats!

frano, deadmandrinking did not hope that you get beaten up.

Do you get beaten up for being straight, Frano?

No just beaten up, I’m sure that happens top you alot, but beaten up specifically for being straight?

This is part of the trend of idiocy that appears to be emerging among those who pretty much tick all the boxes for not being discriminated against ever. Apparently, they feel discriminated against for not being discriminated against, hence not having any real reason to have pride weeks or parades.

Agree with R.Slicker and randomjohn.

Deadmandrinking, No I don’t get beaten up fortunately. I oppose violence. I was being absolutely sincere when I wished all the particpants of the LGBTI week a great time.

My comment about a straight pride week was tongue-in-cheek. I’m sure most people on here have made a tongue-in-cheek comment from time to time, including yourself. As a matter of fact, a quick search on your name indicates you have done just that recently ……something about “pap smears for men”. BTW Deadmandrinking, I’d really appreciate future posts by yourself to be not so aggressive; hoping another blogger gets “beaten up”.

Anyway, all the best on the week for those attending the LGBTI parade.

gay straight bi whatever that is an ugly arse poster.

Obviously Amnesty have solved all the huge issues in the world, so they’re on to the minor ones now.

So Mr Evil – the same person who posted a comment on this site in January criticising the establishment of a memorial to the 1971 Canberra flood victims – doesn’t think Amnesty International should be involved in protecting gays. I suppose if you lived in Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Chad or Mali and there were suddenly laws which enacted mandatory life sentences and the death penalty for anybody suspected of homosexual activities, plus life sentences for any relatives or associates concealing knowledge of a person involved with homosexuality you might change your tune. But then again, probably not. You are well-known on this site as being a goose, your latest idiotic post confirms that.

I think you’ll find that life for anyone living in those countries listed above, (regardless of creed, religious beliefs, race or sexual orientation) is pretty dangerous anyway at the best of times – but of course it’s all about the gays, isn’t it? People are oppressed all around the world for all sorts of reasons.

I’m sure a token vigil held at the ANU will make things so much better in the countries listed above. At least it’ll give fans of Amnesty a warm fuzzy feeling.

And I’m glad you mentioned my views on the flood memorial, as it’s good you know that you’ve obviously got nothing better to do with your life but get yourself so wound up about something posted on the internet over four months ago. I hope my recent comments have the same effect, as you’ll be the one getting the stomach ulcer, not me!

In your opinion, I might be a Goose – but is it any worse than being a Turkey?

So, murder, execution, torture, rape, imprisonment; these are all “minor issues” now?

The Amnesty report notes that in more than 70 countries and some U.S. states same-sex relations are a serious crime, and in some countries homosexual acts are punishable by death. Lesbians, the report notes, are especially vulnerable to abuse, including rape, forced marriages and forced pregnancy.

I wouldn’t mind being a sexuality officer! Is there frisking involved? 😉

i’m 95% sure you have to sign a declaration that you’re gay to get the position.

Or perhaps they can walk and chew gum at the same time.
