Gazza throws in the towel

Senator Humphries announced a press conference this morning at 11.45 to discuss last night’s party meeting and the Senate pre-selection.

We attended with a smattering of reptiles and, as the wind was blowing a hooligan, proceedings were moved inside.

I’ve recorded the whole shebang for posterity.

A particular highlight is at the end when he’s asked how the cash strapped party is going to finance a hard fought campaign against the greens.

Obviously one less worry for him there!

I hate to inform you, but that looks like it might be a ‘fashion’. Unless her reporting job really doesn’t pay anything at all and she just can’t afford even a packet of dye, or has given up on life entirely and is about to trade it in to put on a wimple and habit I suspect she has indeed designed her hair in this manner.

Really? Oh my.

How about that reporter at the front’s dark roots!

“What do you say to the members that were, last night, clearly devastated that my home dye job was a complete failure and that it’s well beyond the stage that I should have done something about it?”

😉

I’d be surprised if Prime Minister Tony Abbott didn’t have a nice job already lined up for Senator Humphries

I would be surprised if Tony Abbott knew who Senator Humphries was. Let us be realistic here, there are 34 Coalition senators and 72 Coalition House of Representatives members. I doubt that Abbott worries himself particularly about keeping every single one of them happy, as long as they’re not ruffling the waters too much (and Humphries never really ruffled the waters much).

He’s a nice fellow, but it never particularly seemed like he did much. I doubt that Zed will be anything more than another time-serving yesman either.

Also sad to see him go because we need a sane and reasonable offset to incompetent shrill Lundy.

Met Gary a few times, seems a very decent bloke. Perhaps a bit too complacent in his seat as he’s been there as long as I can remember. Zed’s problem is he’s trying to get a conservative government over the line in a city full of public servants, probably a good 10-20% of which serve no practical purpose at all. 8 all is probably as close as is humanly possible with that grubby little greens rat deciding the chief minister in the favour of the ministry of sisterhood. Nationally hopefully we’ll get enough of a swing against Leigh that maybe, just maybe, we’re in striking distance in 3 years time – but this would require Abbott to do an exceptional job for the next 3 years and Labor not getting in another Rudd-type car salesman sweet talking the electorate out of pretty good deal like last time.

With the quarter-century anniversary of self government just around the corner, surely it’s time for a review, and with talk of recognising local government in the constitution (and, presumably, all sorts of interesting thoughts being entertained about regional government) someone might like to think about the constitutional provision which limits the minimum (not maximum) size of the ACT, and the extent to which that stands as an obstacle to more sensible and efficient options. Surely GH would relish the opportunity to contribute to an exercise of this sort.

Damn shame that he didn’t continue with the cricket metaphors.

“The selectors have the final say, and they’ve opted for another player”

“I tried to play with a straight bat and in a good spirit, but some of my opponents have gone the Mankad”

“The team has to pull together under Captain Tony, bowl our hearts out, field like demons and put as many runs on the board as we can”

Much more gold to be mined there, a real missed opportunity, instead he shouldered arms without offering a stroke.

My read is he’s catching bullets for the party in the hope of an ambassadorial payback post election.

Bit his closing is the politest way I’ve seen someone say “that guy can go eat a bag of d***s” i’ve seen.

I’m at a loss to see what he’s ever done as Senator, to be honest. Particulaly for Canberra. He let Howard slaughter Canberra, he was going to let Abbott do the same… other senators stand up and lead various causes and things, using their public position, I don’t recall Humphries ever doing that.

Liberal voters should be using their vote more creatively IMO.
