For those of you who have ever seen the Geminids, you will know the time is coming to watch another worthwhile meteor shower.

The shower should be visible on the 13/14th of December, from 1:00am(Canberra time), with the radiant peaking around 2:12am. To see the shower, look North at the horizon or 80 degrees up. The moon will rise in the East as the morning progresses, and hopefully not wipe out the views of the shower!

As long as there is no clouds, bad smoke haze (from the fires) or annoying kids, you should be able to see around 20 meteors an hour. But expect more if it’s a clear night.

Remember, be patient as that first meteor may come after a little bit of waiting. I wish you all luck on the night!

The first night was good!. The peak time was EXCATLY when I predicted. Lucky ehy. In 30 minutes i saw about 12 meteors. A Night worth waking up for.
Best luck for next year.

Wow, RA for the informative win again! I believe this may be what I saw travelling back from Sydney to Canberra early (around 2am) Sunday morning. I only saw one ‘shooting star’ and got very excited as it was the first I have ever seen! Whether it was part of the Geminids or not, it certainly made my trip back from Sydney that much more exciting.

It was around Goulburn and appeared quite large, blue-ish and moved extraordinarily fast. I liked it 🙂 Thanks for the info!

Did anyone see this? Unfortunately I fell asleep rather early and totally missed it. I think it was cloudy though??

A reminder about this for anyone looking to be up around 2am tonight/tomorrow, and if the cloud cover goes away.

And for those interested in a little Big Bang Theory-esque geek fun, check out Geminids – the Trailer.

The gods are providing their own fireworks for my 21st (13th). I might have to view my present from the holy Mt Ainslie (http://the-riotact.com/?p=14665).
