This article is in news.com.au today.

“There tended to be a net loss for about one and a half decades from Canberra to Sydney, but that seems to have changed,” Professor Burnley said.

ABS data showed 717 more people moved from Sydney to Canberra than in the other direction, and 242 more people moved from Sydney to Adelaide than the reverse.

Yes, Ralph, I’d be happy to live in Blacktown too. 🙂

I’d be happy to live in those parts of Sydney I-filed.

Anyway, Gungahlin, Woden, Belconnen is the same as western Sydney.

I guess that’s the payoff for the ANU’s award of Hon. Doctorate to LKY this week.

I just spent this week in Singapore and I noticed that Canberra tourism or what ever its called have a number of ads in little billboard displays on the side of some roads in Singapore. I didn’t take any pics but they certainly wouldn’t have made me want to fly to Canberra for my holidays based on those ads. One of the ads just showed a Singapore family staring at a hot balloon.

717 more spooks. This town is full of people wearing dark glasses and hats well down over their foreheads.

And I thought it was to do with the Anti-Cancer Campaign.

717 people from Sydney – hell ASIS recruiting over the past twelve months could account for that alone, not to mentions the general graduate intake to the APS.

My SO and I moved here in 2006 from Brisbane. We’ve fallen in love with Canberra, and we plan to stay here long term. The thing about Brisbane is that everyone assumes you spend all your time at the beach, which isn’t true. I much prefer a 20 minute commute to work and a great job to humidity and the abundance of ‘special’ Queenslanders about.

Those housing stats are AVERAGE prices. More Canberrans would be thinking comparing with Woollahra or Leichhardt than Merrylands or Blacktown, so Canberra housing is about a third to a half the price of the Canberra-comparable parts of Sydney…

My family and I moved from Brizvegas back to Canberra last year. Happy to keep the stats up.

Hmm not really sure about this article.

I moved from Adelaide to Sydney in 2004 for a better job opportunity. And I moved from Sydney to Canberra in 2005 for another job after my Sydney employer ceased to exist.

If the majority of people my age (mid-late 20s)are amythign like me then the cost of housing has very little to do with moving interstate. Chasing a career is the more likely reason.

This is especially so if moving to Canberra, where house prices and rent are just as high, if not higher, than Sydney.

Maybe the APS just had a particularly big recruitment drive in the last 12 months!

Canberra is staid.

You can now buy houses in many parts of Sydney at prices around the same as Canberra (and lower).

it should be noted that the bitter journo tasked with writing the news.com.au article had to pull a punch and describe canberra as ‘staid’ …. even though the fact is that young people are choosing to come here!
