We’ve just gotten word of a stack of activities that are happening as a part of Earth Science Week. These events are spread between Questacon, CSIRO Discovery Centre, and Sir Harold Raggatt Theatre, are completely free, and are just chock-full of information to feed your brain mouths with.

Get to it.

Petroleum Geology: helping to secure Australia’s energy future
Geoscience Australia petroleum geologist Chris Nicholson will present a public lecture at Questacon explaining the science being done to help secure Australia’s energy future.
A secure supply of adequate, clean, reliable energy at an affordable price is vital for Australia’s economic growth and prosperity. The talk Petroleum Geology: helping to secure Australia’s energy future will explain Geoscience Australia’s work in helping to understand the basic geology of sedimentary basins where petroleum is likely to be found.
This public lecture is being hosted by Questacon as part of Earth Science Week.
Date: Tuesday 15 October 2013
Time: 1pm to 2pm
Where: Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre, King Edward Terrace, Parkes ACT
Cost: Free entry

Geology of Australia: how a continent shaped a nation
Australia’s geography and geology have shaped the nation in many ways, through the climate, soils and landscapes, seascapes, water, minerals and energy, as well as the unique flora and fauna of this continent and what the fossil record tells us about the evolution of life and the planet in general.
Join Dr Richard Blewett from Geoscience Australia for a public lecture exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by Australia’s rich geological heritage.
This public lecture is being hosted by Questacon as part of Earth Science Week.
Date: Tuesday 15 October 2013
Time: 2pm to 3pm
Location: Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre, King Edward Terrace, Parkes ACT
Cost: Free entry

Using satellites to track floods and monitor natural resources
Geoscience Australia has been acquiring satellite imagery over Australia for the last 40 years. This archive of satellite imagery provides a unique opportunity to understand how land cover responds to various drivers such as bushfires, tropical cyclones, droughts and floods.
Leo Lymburner will explain how archival and newly acquired satellite imagery can be used to provide decision support information to resource managers and emergency management agencies.
This lecture is being hosted by Geoscience Australia as part of Earth Science Week.
Date: Thursday 17 October 2013
Time: 11am-12pm
Location: Sir Harold Raggatt Theatre, Geoscience Australia – corner Jerrabomberra Avenue and Hindmarsh Drive, Symonston ACT
Cost: Free entry

GPS, robots and Earth science
Geoscience Australia Geodesy researcher Dr John Dawson will present a public lecture on GPS, robots and Earth science.
Dr Dawson will explain how the state-of-the-art Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) robotic antenna calibration facility recently installed at Geoscience Australia will help to significantly improve the accuracy of satellite positioning technologies. Improving the accuracy of the national GNSS network also improves the accuracy in hand-held devices and smart phones that rely on GPS.
This public lecture is brought to you by Geoscience Australia and Inspiring Australia as part of Earth Science Week.
Date: Friday 18 October 2013
Time: 5.30pm for refreshments, followed by lecture from 6.30pm.
Location: CSIRO Discovery Centre, Clunies Ross St, Black Mountain, ACT 2601
Cost: Free, however bookings are essential via the Inspiring the ACT website.

Solid as a rock…or Not?
Geoscience Australia paleontologist Tegan Smith will present a public talk at Questacon on Saturday 19 October explaining the rock cycle.
Tegan’s talk ‘Solid as a rock…or Not?’ will be aimed at primary school level audience and will use props and audience participation to explain the three main types of rocks, how they form, and how rocks can be transformed from one type of rock in to another.
This public lecture is being hosted by Questacon as part of Earth Science Week.
Date: Saturday 19 October 2013
Time: 11am – 12pm
Where: Questacon – National Science and Technology Centre, King Edward Terrace, Parkes ACT
Cost: Free entry
Tegan will also be presenting a hands-on activity for kids about how fossil pollen is used to explore for oil and gas in Questacon’s Q-Lab gallery between 2 and 4pm on Thursday 17 October, and 12.30 and 3.30pm on Saturday 19 October.

You don’t have to pay an entry fee to get into the doors of Questacon.

Questacon charges for entry into the galleries, these lectures look to be held in the main theatre off the foyer. You should be fine.

That being said, you should totally go check out the galleries at Questacon because they are rad.
