Gerard Dummett and Matthew Dummett charged over child porn

By johnboy - 27 March 2012 44

Following on from the AFP’s arrests last week of two Canberra men alleged to have been part of a child pornography network the ABC has brought us their names from their first court appearance:

The ring was originally exposed in Germany and police say the images uncovered are horrific, with some including the abuse of infants.

Gerard Mark Dummett, 32, from Macgregor and Matthew Dummett, 29, from Franklin are among the 15 people arrested.

Both men have been charged with the possession of child pornography.

They are due to face court again on April 17.

I’m not going to speculate about Gerard’s brother. That matter was not dropped and will be before the courts in due course. It’s dangerous to even speculate about sub-judice matters publicly.

The information I have is that Gerard has had charges dropped today.

So, now that the charges against Gerard have been dropped (his PC was being used remotely by someone else), of all the people here who presumed guilt without a conviction and made the most disgusting allegations possible against him, who will be the first to apologise?

I hope to see his innocence touted as loudly as his arrest, that’s for sure. CSRI said something about this being a bit too implausible for his thinking, but this goes to show how dangerous a place the internet can be. Also, keep in mind that such an action might not have been done to Mr Dummet specifically to damage his reputation, he could be the unfortunate victim of opportunistic hackers. That being said, with his brother still facing the same charge I doubt that he was a random victim.

Why didn’t the cops pick this up in their original investigation?
(ie: before be was arrested, charged and publicly shamed)
