Get rid of the stupid political signs

I thought polititians these days were all about green and saving the environment and stuff? Why do we need 230495734957893457 signs saying vote for some d***head?

Wasn’t there some talk of banning polititians (well, thier lackys actually… what a sad bunch of people…) chucking this crap up?

Big deal about the signs….. let’s fix Canberra and throw out “Ms” Gallagr and “Ms” Hunter/Bresnan/Le Coulter on October 20. Send them the message we will not be walked all over by a bunch of petty greenie whims imposing their own laws on the rest of the population.

The signs will be gone after the election, so let’s grin and bear it, there’s only a few weeks to go anyway.

Why have you put Ms in quotation marks?

(never mind the topic)

Because I remember a day not so long ago a man and his wife were known as Mr and Mrs

These days, it’s Mr and Ms (even if they are married I mean look at Jill Marr/Meagre, she’s referred to as “Ms” Meagre even though she is really Mrs Meagre)

Yeah, bring up an example of a woman who was a victim of a brutal crime to push your case. I don’t care what your politics are, you’re nothing but a desperate bottom-feeder.

It would be more beneficial for all of these unknown politicians to show their faces at public places, etc., during the whole year – so we know who they are and what they do……NOT just a few weeks before election time. I only know a few of them.

Vote for me they ask…..but who are you? Where have you been? what do you represent?
I just lllooovvveeeeee election time – all those “promises”…. Hmmmmm

If you want to be so tasteless as to mention this tragedy in an attempt to score a cheap political point, then at least have the courtesy of getting her name correct.

One Brindabella canadate has a lone sign 1/2 way between Banks and Tharwa. I thought it was a really random place for a sign. I couldn’t read it as I was more concerned about looking for wildlife coming onto the road. But Really random spot.

I thought it may have been something along those lines. Thanks for the clarification!

Why have you put Ms in quotation marks?

He doesn’t agree with anything that occurred after 1961?

Now, back on topic, the signs will be gone after the election. Why not ride it out till Canberra decides on whether we will continue to live under a Labor-Greens government, or make a fresh start with a new Liberal government??

Because he thinks one day all women should be married to him.

I’m guessing it’s because he’s been watching Alan Jones’ style, and thinks it’s the winning form to emulate! Hahahaha! Just remember this in life Mr G: people are laughing AT you, not WITH you! And yes, you always make people laugh! Hahahaha!

I’m on the lookout for some core-flute board, is it illegal to take these signs home? I think if you leave your property on the side of the road without security you can’t expect it to remain. Also if the rangers and other political parties are taking them down I would be doing them a favor.

Ah, Mr G returns, just when I thought you’d finally built your bridge.

There are guidelines you can look at online saying where they can and can’t put the signs – using Gov property like light poles and bridges is a big no-no and will get your signs impounded I believe. I think there is a bit of a game of catch going on with the Rangers some times when the elections come up.

I am amazed at how little effort I have seen in trying to get any details out to the people – only the signs and one pamphlet in my mail box. Maybe a bit of coverage in the media. Those stupid trailer based signs are usually very annoying and located on roads where you are driving faster so don’t have time to digest much of the info anyway.

Its called brand recognition. There will be plenty of people who vote based on who they’ve heard of or seen. After all only a stupid person would vote for someone they know nothing about….

Thing is, Labor is not leaving much of a brand. More than a few candidates seem to want to be Greens (green posters) or Community Alliance Party (same shade of orange). ALP candidates also have sky blue, red and a darker, Liberal-style blue. No matter what the colour, their names are so small, when driving at 80 I can’t read them at all.

I think the sky blue ones are from that Glen McCrea chap running in Belconnen. His signs are quite bright and noticeable.

Campaign signs keep me awake on the sometimes boring highways.

Wrong as usual SnapperJack.

I would say partially wrong. The rangers have been removing signs, not sure though when and why. Though did see a ranger removing signs on Gininderra Drive a bit over a week ago. The candidate in question had 4 or 5 in a row which were removed, now there is just 1, plus 1 each from other candidates but spread out.

Labor isn’t alone in that, the libs are doing it too. You would be hard pressed to find out which party someone is representing based on the road signs without looking very closely.

But I gather that is the ploy from both sides. Get a name out, don’t overtly associate to a particular party and who knows on polling day someone may vote for you without realising you are on the wrong side of politics.

I like them as they help me recognise the names of politicians I won’t vote for.

Got a fridge magnet with some would-be politician’s picture on it last week – as a marketing tool it obviously failed, but it’s holding up various bits of paper quite well 🙂

Ellenborough St., Kaleen.
Candidate poster on the Gungahlin Drive bridge that is visible for people travelling west (from Kaleen to City).

I THINK it’s an ACT election candidate, as opposed to a missing person sign, but too small to see who or what party he represent. (can only make out that it’s a male candidate)

It’s not an eye-sore, but there was no way I would spend too much visual time off the road in front to try to make out the name of the candidate. Not all voters have 20-20 vision.

I have seen a whole pile appear on Isabella Drive. Then to my amusement, some were ripped down, and replaced by some from another faction and so on. They are now all quite close to street poles, I assume to prevent people running over them. With the wind the other day several got loose and were blowing over the road. I watched one blow up in a gust. If a car had come along it would have plastered itself across their windscreen.
In the past I had a sign for the Guinea Pig show blow off the side of the road and the stick hit my car, putting a small dint in it. I didn’t bother even contacting them as the dint was so small it’s hardly noticeable, but it would have made a big difference if it hit my windscreen.
These signs are a nusience, people who put them up should be fined.

Having driven Erindale Drive a number of times recently, my mind has been exercised by the possibility of incinerating the Joyous Burch corflutes.

Along the lines of a powerful water pistol squirting petroleum jelly, covering each face, and then igniting same with some form of flame thrower.

This is all beyond my technical talents, so I would appreciate input from similarly inclined Defence related arsonists. 🙂

Yes, it’s really passe and pointless.

I would say I won’t vote for anyone I see such a sign for, but that’s a given anyway and thus isn’t much of a threat.

I love the fact that, by and large, the fight for recognition is against their fellow party candidates.

To any candidate reading this – if I see your face or name on a roadside sign littering Canberra’s roadways, I will be sure to put your vote at the bottom of my voting paper.

PS why put your desperate faces on them anyway, we vote by names/party groups and not by attractiveness.

I actually find them really distracting driving at night in the dark areas, as I’m usually keeping an eye out for roos and sometimes from a distance in the unlit areas you just see “an object” and it’s not till you get closer you realise it’s just a stupid sign.

Well I actually thought that *all* roadside signs – not just political – were banned in the ACT. Something to do with the garden city image. I know that in past elections whenever signs appeared they were quickly confiscated by rangers so I don’t know why we have such a tsunami of them this time.

Wrong as usual SnapperJack.

I’m with you on this! If they think i’m stupid enough to simply vote for the person whose name I saw last (or the most) on the side of the road, they’re mistaken (I’m talking to you Liberals, with your cars/trailers stopped all over the Parkway!). Talk about desperate!
If you want people to remember you favourably on polling day, come up with sound policy ideas and promote them. People will then decide if they like your direction or not!

Problem is, it’s the politicians who’d have to ban ’em!
