This Friday night (11-NOV-05) a trivia night is being held to fundraise for three summer camps run by St Vincent de Paul.

The camps are run by a group of volunteers, mainly young adults, who say they have “no religious or political agenda ” but rather aim to “provide positive role models and have plenty of safe, supervised fun”. The cost of the camps — accommodation, food, travel, equipment, specialised staff and so on — is subsidised by St Vincent de Paul but a supplement of $200 per child is needed (and they’re hoping to take 100 kids in total this year).

The trivia night will be held at the Italo-Australian Club in Forrest at 7pm. Cost is $30 per head with tables of 10. To book tickets call 6282 2722

A poster with more information about the night is here.

The organisers of the night are also looking for donations of foodstuffs (both fresh & packaged), decorations, restaurant vouchers, alcohol, toiletries, movie vouchers and theatre tickets. These items will be served at supper or given as prizes, raffled, or sold in silent auctions throughout the night.

UPDATED: Just a reminder, this in on tonight and tickets will be available at the door. The new bright star of the internet, Samuel Gordon-Stewart will reportedly be in attendance.

And don’t forget those turtlenecks you have laying around your closet gathering dust … Sam needs to update his wardrobe, and you don’t want him lurking anywhere near your closet!

Just wanted to say a massive thankyou to anybody reading Riot Act who turned up to support us on Friday night. We were really pleased with the turnout and raised an amount which puts us on track to put on three camps for local kids this Summer. We’ve still got a way to go though, so look forward to more badgering from Vinnies Youth in the next couple of months – if anyone feels they may be able to help us out in any way or would like some more information about who we are and what we do – please don’t hestitate to contact me via email: clare.carnell@lexisnexis.com.au, or through the Vinnies Centre on 62822722.

Alrighty then, well over all it was a good night. The 7:30 start was a good, yet subtle, indication that this was not a dinner event. A raft of snacks and drinks were available throughout the night however, so those who did not have dinner did not starve. (I had fish and chips beforehand, not that it has anything to do with anything).

It was a mostly enjoyable evening with silent auctions, raffles and lucky door prizes which should have been called lucky chair prizes as the prize tickets were on the seats…

My three criticisms of the event are:
1. Not enough questions…6 rounds of 10 questions…but being a charity event I guess they did have to spend half the night advertising their services…10 rounds would have been better though.

2. Presenters who felt a need to tell really bad jokes (some of which were in very bad taste IMHO), babble incoherently for lengthy periods of time, yell at the audience, or all of the above. (ATTN Mark Parton: starting the night by pompously announcing you run 30 or so events a year and that you don’t care if we talk over the top of you, but telling everyone to shut up when Anna Joy Hoffman is talking, does not put people in a good mood, and it does not reflect well on yourself. Maybe you had a bad afternoon, I don’t know, but please try to be nice, people think of you as fun and nice, not grumpy and yelling. I can forgive you as I suspect you had a bad day, but please try and keep this in mind at functions…especially friday night functions.)

3. Somebody just can’t setup a PA system can they…feedback isn’t pleasant, although they did fiddle throughout the night to fix it, with mixed results…they’ll know better next time.

All of that put to one side, the event went very well, everyone seemed to have fun, and plenty of money was raised for a very worthwhile cause.

I enjoyed myself and met some very interesting and nice people, as well as re-meeting some people I have met before. I was pleasantly surprised when Kate Carnell remembered me from the time we met in City Supabarn years ago…she is a lot shorter than I remember, but I was a lot shorter at the time.

My team didn’t win, we were joint fourth (or fifth). There were close to 30 tables of approx 10 people so it was a good turnout.

Good fun really, I think everyone enjoyed themselves, although it was a pity Johnboy didn’t make it…never mind, another time perhaps.
