Get used to GIO Stadium

Canberra Stadium has tweeted that GIO have bought the rights to name the Stadium in Bruce.

Because you wanted to be that little more confused.

According to rumour a knock down price has been negotiated.

UPDATE: Andrew Barr’s statement is now available:

Canberra’s premiere sporting venue has a new naming-rights sponsor. From 1 January 2014 the home of the Canberra Raiders and ACT Brumbies will be known as GIO Stadium Canberra.

The ACT Government and GIO Insurance have entered a commercial arrangement for four years, with the option to extend for another four.

This is the first time the stadium has had a commercial sponsor.

The Government is pleased to welcome GIO, a nationally recognised company, as the naming-rights sponsor.

Will always be called Bruce Stadium…

The same way as Myers is still Grace Bros.

Or if you have been around long enough Grace Bros Belconnen was always Myer.

call it what ever they like it’s still rip off and probably more so that a insurance company has the naming rights so won’t be attending .

Youngs. It will always be Youngs

A colleague of mine still refers to Harvey Norman as Norman Ross.

That’s hardly normal.

Visy Park is still Optus Oval, when it’s not being Princes Park. IIRC Optus Oval was the first stadium in Australia to have a naming rights deal. Back when Carlton lead the game in the boardroom as well as on the field. Ahh, those were the days.

I for one welcome our new insurance overlords.

But if it rains heavily, do they plan to protect us with comprehensive cover, and where will the excess run off ?

Canberra Centre has probably lost the Monaro Mall moniker though 😉

Not in my Area of Operations. 🙂

Only by idiots. Can you see the conversation:

Bloke: I’m going to the footy.
Other Bloke: Where at?
Bloke: GIO Stadium Canberra, of course!

It’s Bruce Stadium. Always has been. Always will be, regardless of what that fool Barr says.

Well, the good thing then is someone dings the stadium, we’ll get a new for old replacement!

I predict this attempt at renaming Bruce Stadium will be as successful as “McFadden Stadium” in 1990. Remember that? McFadden Kit Homes began sponsoring the Raiders, renamed the stadium then went belly up a month or so later when they couldn’t pay the bills. The Raiders were left with a mountain of jerseys and other merchandise bearing the McFadden name and newly printed letterhead referring to the “McFadden Raiders” had to be pulped.

Yep Bruce Stadium it was and forever will be for me…

GIO are getting a very good run with the ACT Govt lately, first third party rego reforms, now this – have they done a bulk deal :)?

We still call the GDE the GDE 🙂

Canberra Centre has probably lost the Monaro Mall moniker though 😉

Anyway they reckon they are building a new stadium by 2020, given Bruce Stadium will be over 40 years old by then.

Still better than the North QLD stadium – 1300 SMILES stadium.

Will always be called Bruce Stadium…

If people still say Woden Plaza this stadium will always be called Bruce Stadium regardless of who rebrands it.
