Getting out of Jervis Bay? [With poll]

The Canberra Times brings word that Chief Minister Gallagher is drawing up plans to return responsibility for the tiny patch of Jervis Bay that the ACT still delivers services to.

Ms Gallagher says it is ”crazy” for the territory to continue to provide child protection, schools, courts and even driving licences to a community 263km away.

The ACT Government wants the arrangements changed so that services would be delivered to Jervis Bay, where ACT laws apply, by the NSW Government from the nearby town of Nowra.

Since it was surrendered to the Commonwealth in 1915, so Canberra would have a ”seaport”, the enclave, which is a Commonwealth Territory and not part of the ACT, has been administered from the nation’s capital.

It seems unlikely Jervis Bay will get the road and rail links to be a major port in our lifetimes, is there any good reason to continue the charade?

But when the dual lane highway is tunnelled through the mountains and so the coast is only an hour away, we will want to still live in the ACT and commute.

I’ve always thought that Canberra, more or less as it is, but located around Jervis Bay, would be one of the best ‘cities’ in the world.

Maybe we should trade it with NSW for the land between the Yass River and the current border.

Yes. I know. That was why I chose it as an example. Apparently you can still find the footings where they started actual construction before the whole thing was shelved.

It’s now a carpark for Murray’s Beach.

If the child protection at Jervis Bay is as good as that currently being offered in the ‘mainland’ ACT, I’d say that there’s very little for the most vulnerable citizens to lose.

Although Nowra has some serious social problems too. (As does this obscure large entity called NSW, I hear.)

That place went downhill in the early 1990s when the nudies left Murrays Beach. No reason to go there now 😛

Wow, i always assumed the ACT “land” on the coast would just be a fenced off pier, not 20kms of native vegetation. Sure, just change the law and give it up. Lets just lease it (for $1) to NSW for 100 years or something, just in case we need it down the line

If anyone is still worried about it’s intended purpose, remember that all that’s actually being proposed here is having NSW deliver the services rather than the ACT. Should we eventually need a sea port or federally owned site on which to build a nuclear power plant or whatever, it would still be available since it would remain under federal control. This move just seems like common sense.

They have already tried to build a nuclear power station there about 50 years ago. Most councils controlling NSW coastal areas have already banned any further development near the ocean as that land is apparently going to flooded by rising water levels due to some vague climate theory The computers say so).
Only tree huggers and whale watchers go there these days. Let’s get rid of now.

What is NSW closes the borders? How are we to send message to our Monarch to send help without a seaport?

Keep it! Expand it! Move the whole of Canberra down there! No need for the rat-race to the coast at the weekend!
