Rejoice oh Giants fans in Canberra.

Andrew Barr has launched the “Canberra home guernsey”:

The guernsey was an entry in the community design competition which was won by Brindabella College and another local Canberran, graphic designer John Garrard.

Having the GWS playing in Canberra is great news for local AFL fans.

It is also great news for Canberra’s tourism operators who will benefit greatly from the thousands of visitors games will attract from around our region.

The first home game in Canberra will be on 28 April 2012 against the Western Bulldogs.

GWS, why not at least call yourself the GWS-Canberra giants to show your true commitment? That will at least justify the $23m the ACT government gifted you without our approval. The Canberra Raiders and the ACT Brumbies should inspire you.

I don’t mind the jersey, and as an Aussie Rules tragic (go the pies), I will definitely be getting along to every game to support the AFL in Canberra, even thought I don’t like the concept of forcing the sport on to the Western Sydney demographic.

Seems to me GWS might stand for Greater Waste of Space, but I love the sport and will be there to support it. The AFL will make it work even if its a 25 year, 100 million dollar project (see Mike Sheehan’s article on the health of the game in the Herald Sun today).

I didnt know the Brumbies were out of favour. Is it already time to move on to a new sport and see “fans” walking around everywhere showing their newly found long term loyalty.

Ignorance is bliss it would seem.

Aussie Rules was played at the competition level, long before the two Rugby codes arrived in the Nations Capital.

Support for the two Rugby codes increased significantly with the influx of those from NSW and QLD. Further to this, when the APS stopped centralising and moving its staff to Canberra from the Southern States back in the mid-late 80s, support for the VFL/AFL and the code itself levelled out.

I arrived year in 1981, and I am happy to argue the point, that RU and RL did not dominate the minds of football fans back then.

The subtlety of my point may have been lost. You have the advantage of me in that I didnt get here until 1984 and dont have the ability to read the minds of people to find out what dominates them so cannot provide the hard facts you have done.

My point was more that in Canberra there seems to always be a sport thats flavour of the month, as long as they win. When I arrived here the Canberra Cannons were all the go with games televised live and “Super Coach Jerry Lee(sp?)” walking across LBG. With the arrival of the Raiders and the implosion of the Cannons support swung to them. After they started winning of course. I was a minor functionary in the “Green Machine” when they were still based in Qbn so, sadly, can recall crowd numbers as they both peaked and troughed. With the Raiders eventual levelling out suddenly the Brumbies were all the rage with Raiders caps and guernseys flung of and the ubiquitous Brumbies hats everywhere.

I have no strong feelings about AFL or its support in Canberra.I imagine this move will be seen as good by supporters.I was more obverving that a large portion of our sporting population are somewhat fickle and will no doubt jump on this bandwagon too.

Haters gonna hate. I like the guernsey! I grew up playing AFL, currently have Foxtel for no other reason than AFL and have signed up to GWS to support AFL. There, I said it. I like AFL.

This is correct. Growing up back in the 70s, I was a supporter of the Manuka Bullants, and only one kid at my entire school played rugby league. The annual visit by two VFL teams to play an exhibition match at Manuka was a big deal back then. The VFL used to show live on TV on Saturday afternoons on CTC7; this was even before the Swans moved to Sydney and Sunday afternoon games were being broadcast. The only rugby league on TV in Canberra then was on ABC on Saturday afternoons; other than that, CTC7 showed a replay of a Sunday game on Sunday nights at 10.30pm after the movie was over.

I may, or may not, have been playing too much skyrim lately.

JB, I know this is off topic, but my boys are truly desperate for Skyrim for Christmas. Is it *really* that good?

I know a club house and training facilities with ovals attached in Griffith that could be used as a local base. Apparently the incumbent sporting club doesnt need it anymore.

So Barr spends what was it.. $20m(?) of Canberra taxpayers money to get a handful of home games for what must be the 3rd or 4th most popular participation sport in this city and in exchange they whack a very stylised version of a Canberra landmark on their shirts (so stylised in fact that it takes some Canberran’s a while to work out what the hell it is) for home games only. No-one outside the ACT sees this ‘value for money’ advertising?!

I’m having great difficulty seeing any value in this. Like Stanehope with his art, this is just Barr indulging his personal passion with someone else’s money. Another piss-poor decision that has lost Labor my vote at the next election:(

I was going to submit a design for this competition, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

There is a lot of that going ’round the internets right now. I assume it has something to do with all the archery thefts round Canberra lately? 🙂
