On Friday Territory And Municipal Services let us know they’ve finished $2.5 million in upgrades to the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Aikman Drive.

“The $2.5m project included the construction of a fourth leg at the intersection to provide access to the future suburb of Lawson which will be constructed to the north of Ginninderra Drive,” said Tony Gill, Director, RoadsACT.

“The project also included the construction of new traffic signals at the intersection of Aikman drive and Joy Cummings Place.

“The work will make it easier for vehicles to turn right into and out of Joy Cummings Place and provide a safe pedestrian crossing to the bus stop on Aikman Drive.

“A footpath has also been constructed to connect Joy Cummings Place to Ginninderra Drive.

Thats the whole problem. The solution is not to stop and wait. If drivers were competent they could speed up to 60 or 80 mor 100, whatever the speed limit is and slide in easily. The problem is some lanes aren’t long enough for this and people do it at 20+ km/h below the limit thus causing congestion.

There is still a slip lane, it is just shorter. Guess it makes the cars turning left of Akiman actually stop to give way to the through traffic on Ginninderra Drive rather than letting them thick they can speed up (to maybe max 60km/h) and squeeze their way into through traffic is doing 80km. So yes the removal is probably because people don’t quite get the fact that they need to give way to through traffic rather than giving them the impression that they can force their way in.

The solution of course is to wait. In busy traffic the through traffic will get stopped by the lights for at least 50% of the time, which leaves plenty of time for cars to turn left.

And yes puggy it is a surprise they didn’t duplicate the whole lot, you wouldn’t think it would be too hard or too costly.

What’s annoying about this intersection and the next one into William Slim is that they’ve removed the slip lanes you could use to get in traffic. Apparently this is too difficult for Canberra drivers so now traffic banks up instead.

I know it’s been said before, but $2.5 million?! And what was wrong with also making it four lanes all the way to Eastern Valley Way?
