The ABC reports that the Giralang Residents Action Group (GRAG) is celebrating after the ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) knocked back the conversion of their shops into apartments.

Now they’d like some shops back.

Every major point GRAG contended was adopted by ACTPLA as a reason for rejecting the proposal. If everyone (Minister, planning authority, chief minister, residents) thinks the same way about what Giralang needs/deserves, (everyone except the developer of course!) then why should the developer be permitted to retain the land? 3.5 years, nothing but money grabbing townhouse plans – sorry your time is up, you no longer have the right to retain the lease for this land. But the govt remains too scared to play hardball with business, for fear they make take their cash elsewhere. And who loses? Will be another 3.5 years before anything happens, if we’re lucky.

ACTPLA have issued a press release about the development application.

It’s nice to see the little guy get some runs on the board. Well done that group! I wonder if they can get the shop thing to fly?

“Effectively the residents of Giralang have been without a … shopping centre for three and a half years now.”

… a sizeable chunk of which has been taken up waiting for ACTPLA to make a decision about this DA!

“There is evidence that supermarket operators have expressed interest
in the site and this contradicts the argument of non-viability of a
commercial and retail centre in Giralang.”

The ironing is delicious!
